A Look Back At The 2009 NHL Draft

2009+NHL+Draft+Portraits+uZtbua2SSfjl

So we have finally reached a point in the annual NHL draft recaps where I can actually remember what happened in the lead-up to the draft itself, as it around 2009 where I started to keep more of an eye on Junior and College Hockey. The complete nerding-out is still a couple more years away, so stay tuned for that one in about 24 months.

Back in 2009, I remember TSN trying to convince me that John Tavares was under severe competition in being the first overall pick, which I dismissed immediately as network hype. I still believe that to be the case five years afterwards, but how did the rest of the non Jun Tavarez picks pan out? Well let’s find out.

Anaheim Ducks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 15 Guelph Storm Peter Holland C 68 10-7-17 Toronto Marlies
1 26 US NTDP Kyle Palmieri RW 141 29-31-60 Anaheim Ducks
 2 37 Brampton Battalion Mat Clark D 2 0-0-0 Norfolk Admirals
 3 76 Magnitogorsk Jr. Igor Bobkov G 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
 4 106 Jyp Jr. Sami Vatanen D 56 8-15-23 Anaheim Ducks
 5 136 Tri-City Storm Radoslav Illo C 0 N/A Bemidji State Beavers
 6 166 Oshawa Generals Scott Valentine D 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals

Despite having the presence of Igor Bobkov, this isn’t quite a stelar draft. Though I expect Palmieri to get some more chances with Teemu now calling it a day. I’m still crying over that.

Atlanta Thrashers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 4 Vancouver Giants Evander Kane C 324 99-101-200 Winnipeg Jets
2 34 Frolunda HC Carl Klingberg LW 10 1-0-1 St. John’s Ice Caps
2 45 US NTDP Jeremy Morin LW 39 8-8-16 Rockford Ice Hogs
 4 117 Saginaw Spirit Edward Pasquale G 0 N/A St. John’s Ice Caps
 4 120 Guelph Storm Ben Chiarot D 1 0-0-0 St. John’s Ice Caps
 5 125 Saginaw Spirit Cody Sol D 0 N/A Ontario Reign
 6 155 Kamloops Blazers Jimmy Bubnick C 0 N/A Unknown (Saskatchewan Huskies in 12/13)
7 185 Spokane Chiefs Levko Koper LW 0 N/A Alberta Golden Bears
 7 203 Waterloo Black Hawks Jordan Samuels-Thomas LW 0 N/A Quinnipiac Bobcats

Provided that Kane isn’t run out of town by Gary Lawless, this has been a pretty good draft for the Jets franchise. Okay maybe not with the late picks, but who doesn’t love some CIS studs.

Boston Bruins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 25 Rimouski Oceanic Jordan Caron RW 123 12-16-28 Boston Bruins
 3 86 Prince Albert Raiders Ryan Button D 0 N/A Idaho Steelheads
4 112 Windsor Spitfires Lane MacDermid LW 21 2-2-4 Abbotsford Heat
6 176 Kitchener Rangers Tyler Randell RW 0 N/A Providence Bruins
 7 206 Nepean Raiders Ben Sexton C 0 N/A Clarkson Golden Knights

I completely forgot that Lane MacDermid played in Windsor. Caron’s finally getting a chance to play on a more regular basis for the Bruins, which may prove to be the saving grace for this draft class.

Buffalo Sabres

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 13 Peterborough Petes Zach Kassian RW 156 25-25-50 Vancouver Canucks
 3 66 Kootenay Ice Brayden McNabb D 37 1-7-8 Manchester Monarchs
4 104 Sudbury Wolves Marcus Foligno LW 135 18-32-50 Buffalo Sabres
5 134 Malden Catholic High School Mark Adams D 0 N/A Providence Friars
 6 164 Miami Redhawks Connor Knapp G 2 0-0-1 (3.12) Greenville Road Warriors
7 194 Shawinigan Cataractes Maxime Legault RW 0 N/A Gwinnett Gladiators

Kassian turned into Cody Hodgson and McNabb was dealt for Hudson Fasching in some hot prospect swapping action, so it will be interesting to see how those deals play out in the long-term. The Foligno pick though is pretty good for a fourth rounder.

Calgary Flames

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 23 Skelleftea Tim Erixon D 51 0-7-7 Springfield Falcons
3 74 Chilliwack Bruins Ryan Howse LW 0 N/A Stockton Thunder
 4 111 Farjestads Henrik Bjorklund RW 0 N/A Bofors
5 141 Surrey Eagles Spencer Bennett LW 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
 6 171 TPS Joni Ortio G 9 4-4-0 (2.51) Abbotsford Heat
 7 201 Saskatoon Blades Gaelan Patterson C 0 N/A Idaho Steelheads

Poor Tim Erixon. Ortio may prove to be the one redeeming factor of this draft class, mainly because he’s a Finnish goalie.

Carolina Hurricanes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 27 Shawinigan Cataractes Philippe Paradis LW 0 N/A Syracuse Crunch
 2 51 New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs Brian Dumoulin D 6 0-1-1 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
3 88 Skelleftea Mattias Lindstrom LW 0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
5 131 Guelph Storm Matt Kennedy RW 0 N/A Unknown (Fort Wayne Komets in 12/13)
 6 178 Kalpa Rasmus Rissanen D 0 N/A Charlotte Checkers
 7 208 Red Deer Rebels Tommi Kivisto D 0 N/A Ilves

Well here’s our clubhouse leader for the worst draft class. Dumoulin was dealt to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal in the 2012 draft, where shockingly, Ray Shero used the draft pick he gained to grab another bloody defender. More on Shero later.

Chicago Blackhawks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 28 Camrose Kodiaks Dylan Olsen D 72 3-10-13 Florida Panthers
 2 59 Georgetown Raiders Brandon Pirri C 56 13-14-27 Florida Panthers
3 89 Totino Grace High School Daniel Delisle LW 0 N/A Idaho Steelheads
 4 119 Everett Silvertips Byron Froese C 0 N/A Cincinnati Cyclones
 5 149 Djurgardens Marcus Kruger C 206 21-46-67 Chicago Blackhawks
6 177 Cumberland Grads David Pacan RW 0 N/A Kalamazoo Wings
 7 195 Cedar Rapids Roughriders Paul Phillips D 0 N/A Colorado Eagles
 7 209 Toledo Walleye David Gilbert C 0 N/A Toledo Walleye

David Pacan got drafted? Kruger was a bloody steal in the fifth round, while both Olsen and Pirri look to be getting the ice time in Florida that they probably weren’t going to get in Chicago. All in all, a pretty good day at the office despite a few missed picks.

Colorado Avalanche

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 3 Brampton Battalion Matt Duchene C 337 105-158-263 Colorado Avalanche
 2 33 Erie Otters Ryan O’Reilly C 345 73-118-191 Colorado Avalanche
 2 49 Saskatoon Blades Stefan Elliott D 58 6-12-18 Lake Erie Monsters
 3 64 Kelowna Rockets Tyson Barrie D 106 15-36-51 Colorado Avalanche
 5 124 Boston Terriers Kieran Millan G 0 N/A Denver Cutthroats
 6 154 US NTDP Brandon Maxwell G 0 N/A Rogle
 7 184 Nobles High School Gus Young D 0 N/A Yale Bulldogs

The best draft class so far by a country mile. Sure O’Reilly might not be around Colorado for much longer given the contract mess, but when you get a top line player in Duchene with the third overall pick, you can’t be too upset if other guys don’t pan out or leave early.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 21 Chicago Steel John Moore  D 173 7-22-29 New York Rangers
 2 56 US NTDP Kevin Lynch C 0 N/A Evansville Icemen
 4 94 Moncton Wildcats David Savard D 105 7-18-25 Columbus Blue Jackets
 5 137 Exeter High School Thomas Larkin D 0 N/A Evansville Icemen
 6 167 Malmo Anton Blomqvist D 0 N/A Malmo
7 197 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Kyle Neuber RW 0 N/A Guelph Gryphons

Fun fact, in his one CIS season so far, Neuber has put up a better single-year point total than he had during his entire OHL tenure. Moore’s now part of the Rangers back-line after being part of the Gaborik deal, but Savard has prevented this from being a total mess for Columbus.

Dallas Stars

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 8 Brandon Wheat Kings Scott Glennie C 1 0-0-0 Texas Stars
2 38 Des Moines Buccaneers Alex Chiasson RW 86 19-23-42 Dallas Stars
 3 69 St. Michael’s Buzzers Reilly Smith RW 122 23-37-60 Boston Bruins
5 129 Edmonton Oil Kings Tomas Vincour RW 88 7-9-16 AK Bars Kazan
6 159 Penticton Vees Curtis McKenzie LW 0 N/A Texas Stars

That Scott Glennie pick is looking worse and worse by the day. Other than that though, this is a pretty decent draft for only five picks, especially if McKenzie can build upon a great year in the AHL.

Detroit Red Wings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
2 32 Red Deer Rebels Landon Ferraro C 4 0-0-0 Grand Rapids Griffins
2 60 Zvolen HKM Tomas Tatar LW 100 24-23-47 Detroit Red Wings
3  75 Victoriaville Tigres Andrej Nestrasil RW 0 N/A Grand Rapids Griffins
 3 90 Rimouski Oceanic Gleason Fournier D 0 N/A Grand Rapids Griffins
5 150 Green Bay Gamblers Nick Jensen D 0 N/A Grand Rapids Griffins
6 180 Kelowna Rockets Mitch Callahan RW 1 0-0-0 Grand Rapids Griffins
 7 210 HV71 Adam Almquist D 2 1-0-1 Grand Rapids Griffins

Okay, this isn’t quite a vintage Red Wings draft, at this point at least. With that said, the Tatar pick is a really good one for a selection at the very end of the second round.

Edmonton Oilers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 10 Timra IK Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson LW 218 32-38-70 St. Louis Blues
 2 40 Timra IK Anton Lander C 94 2-6-8 Oklahoma City Barons
3 71 Minnetonka High School Troy Hesketh D 0 N/A Unknown (Hamline Pipers in 11/12)
3 82 Everett Silvertips Cameron Abney RW 0 N/A Orlando Solar Bears
 4 99 Vernon Vipers Kyle Bigos D 0 N/A Ontario Reign
 4 101 Ilves Toni Rajala LW 0 N/A HV71
5 133 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Olivier Roy G 0 N/A Alaska Aces

Paajarvi ended up being the forgotten middle child of the three big picks by the Oilers at this point, as he was lumped in between Eberle and Hall. Lander may get a full-time shot at some point, but that Troy Hesketh pick is sure a hot mess.

Florida Panthers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 14 Drummondville Voltigeurs Dmitri Kulikov D 313 24-75-99 Florida Panthers
 2 44 US NTDP Drew Shore C 67 8-12-20 San Antonio Rampage
3 67 Fargo Force Josh Birkholz RW 0 N/A Cincinnati Cyclones
4 107 Owen Sound Attack Garrett Wilson LW 3 0-0-0 San Antonio Rampage
 5 135 Okotoks Oilers Corban Knight C 7 1-0-1 Abbotsford Heat
5 138 South Kent School Wade Megan C 0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
 6 165 Windsor Spitfires Scott Timmins C 24 1-0-1 Albany Devils

It’s not often that a 14th overall pick ends up sticking in the show right away, but Kulikov has done just that. Drew Shore looks alright as well, so for a Panthers team that has had some tough times in the draft in the past, this may prove to be one of their better classes.

Los Angeles Kings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 5 Brandon Wheat Kings Brayden Schenn C 192 40-47-87 Philadelphia Flyers
2 35 Barrie Colts Kyle Clifford LW 276 22-26-48 Los Angeles Kings
 3 84 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Nicolas Deslauriers LW 17 1-0-1 Rochester Americans
 4 95 Montreal Juniors Jean-Francois Berube G 0 N/A Manchester Monarchs
4 96 Medicine Hat Tigers Linden Vey RW 18 0-5-5 Manchester Monarchs
 5 126 Owen Sound Attack David Kolomatis D 0 N/A Hershey Bears
 6 156 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Michael Pelech C 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
6 179 Calgary Hitmen Brandon Kozun RW 0 N/A Toronto Marlies
7 186 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Jordan Nolan C 134 10-10-20 Los Angeles Kings
7 198 Wenatchee Wild Nic Dowd C 0 N/A St. Cloud State Huskies

In a total shocker, the Kings had another awesome draft. Okay Schenn’s gone, but you have a seventh rounder who has played key minutes over the last couple of years in Nolan, a college stud in Dowd, a super pest in Clifford, and yet another strong scorer in Vey. No wonder this team’s the new benchmark in the NHL.

Minnesota Wild

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 16 Eden Prairie High School Nick Leddy D 258 20-73-93 Chicago Blackhawks
 3 77 Plymouth Whalers Matt Hackett G 21 4-13-1 (2.82) Rochester Americans
4 103 Calgary Hitmen Kris Foucault LW 1 0-0-0 Iowa Wild
 4 116 Shattuck St. Mary’s Alexander Fallstrom RW 0 N/A Providence Bruins
 6 161 Red Deer Rebels Darcy Kuemper G 32 13-10-4 (2.37) Minnesota Wild
 6 163 Blues Jere Sallinen LW 0 N/A HPK
 7 182 Shattuck St. Mary’s Erik Haula LW 46 6-9-15 Minnesota Wild
7 193 Dallas Stars Midget AAA Anthony Hamburg C 0 N/A RIT Tigers

In hindsight, dealing away Nick Leddy for Cam Barker might not have been the best move for the Wild. With that said, Haula and Kuemper have both been great late round selections, and they were able to trade Hackett to bring the Population of Pominville.

Montreal Canadians

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 18 Omaha Lancers Louis LeBlanc C 50 5-5-10 Hamilton Bulldogs
 3 65 Blues Joonas Nattinen C 1 0-0-0 Hamilton Bulldogs
 3 79 Hotchkiss School Mac Bennett D 0 N/A Michigan Wolverines
4 109 Dynamo Moscow Alexander Avtsin RW 0 N/A HK Lipetsk
 5 139 Drummondville Voltigeurs Gabriel Dumont C 15 1-2-3 Hamilton Bulldogs
6 169 Kingston Voyageurs Dustin Walsh C 0 N/A Unknown (Dartmouth Big Green in 12/13)
 7 199 Indiana Ice Mike Cichy C 0 N/A Western Michigan Broncos
 7 211 Karpat Petteri Simila G 0 N/A Blues

While the crowd in Montreal was thrilled when Louis LeBlanc was taken, the Habs brass are probably praying that he steps up soon, because the rest of the draft class sure hasn’t, save Dumont.

Nashville Predators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 11 Windsor Spitfires Ryan Ellis D 144 11-33-44 Nashville Predators
2 41 Edina High School Zach Budish RW 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
 2 42 Shawinigan Cataractes Charles-Olivier Roussel D 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
3 70 Guelph Storm Taylor Beck RW 23 3-4-7 Milwaukee Admirals
 3 72 Guelph Storm Michael Latta C 17 1-3-4 Hershey Bears
 4 98 Waterloo Black Hawks Craig Smith C 195 42-58-100 Nashville Predators
 4 102 Mora IK Mattias Ekholm D 65 1-8-9 Nashville Predators
4 110 Fargo Force Nick Oliver C 0 N/A St. Cloud State Huskies
 5 132 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Gabriel Bourque LW 151 27-34-61 Nashville Predators
 7 192 Westside Warriors Cam Reid C 0 N/A Denver Cutthroats

A challenger to the Kings appears, especially with the Smith and Bourque picks. Though to be fair, I’ve loved Ryan Ellis since he played in Windsor, so I’m a tad bit biased.

New Jersey Devils

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 20 Djurgardens Jacob Josefson C 118 7-18-25 New Jersey Devils
 2 54 Chicoutimi Sagueneens Eric Gelinas D 61 7-22-29 New Jersey Devils
 3 73 Djurgardens Alexander Urbom D 34 3-1-4 Albany Devils
 4 114 Sioux City Musketeers Seth Helgeson D 0 N/A Albany Devils
5 144 Okotoks Oilers Derek Rodwell LW 0 N/A North Dakota
 6 174 Shawinigan Cataractes Ashton Bernard LW 0 N/A Unknown (Riviere-du-Loup in 11/12)
7 204 Cowichan Valley Capitals Curtis Gedig D 0 N/A Ohio State Buckeyes

Your prototypical Devils draft, neither amazing nor horrible. Just there.

New York Islanders

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 1 London Knights John Tavares C 350 136-179-315 New York Islanders
1 12 Oshawa Generals Calvin De Haan D 52 3-13-16 New York Islanders
 2 31 Blues Mikko Koskinen G 4 2-1-0 (4.33) Novosibirsk Sibir
 3 62 Lulea Anders Nilsson G 23 9-9-2 (3.05) Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 4 92 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Casey Cizikas C 140 12-23-50 New York Islanders
 5 122 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Anton Klementyev D 1 0-0-0 Sokol Krasnoyarsk
6 152 Edina High School Anders Lee C 24 10-6-16 New York Islanders

That Tavares guy is pretty good, and this Isles draft was actually pretty solid. Sure, both goalies are now in the KHL full-time, but Cizikas was a good fourth rounder, and Lee might be a steal after  his time with Notre Dame and a stellar late season stint.

New York Rangers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 19 Andover High School Chris Kreider C 89 19-21-40 New York Rangers
 2 47 Kingston Frontenacs Ethan Werek C 0 N/A Portland Pirates
 3 80 US NTDP Ryan Bourque C 0 N/A Hartford Wolf Pack
 5 127 Ceske Budejovice Roman Horak C 84 6-13-19 Oklahoma City Barons
5 140 Owen Sound Attack Scott Stajcer G 0 N/A Hartford Wolf Pack
 6 170 Sudbury Wolves Daniel Maggio D 0 N/A Lake Erie Monsters
 7 200 Mechel Mikhail Pashnin D 0 N/A Lokomotiv Yraoslavl

Krieder seems set to be a top forward for the Rangers, and Bourque should eventually get a full-time shot. It’s a shame Werek hasn’t panned out yet though.

Ottawa Senators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 9 Spokane Chiefs Jared Cowen D 158 12-21-33 Ottawa Senators
2 39 Brynas Jakob Silfverberg LW 100 20-22-42 Anaheim Ducks
 2 46 Frolunda Robin Lehner G 61 21-24-10 (2.82) Ottawa Senators
 4 100 Miami Redhawks Chris Wideman D 0 N/A Binghamton Senators
 5 130 Drummondville Voltigeurs Mike Hoffman C 29 3-3-6 Binghamton Senators
5 146 Cedar Rapids Rough Riders Jeff Costello LW 0 N/A Notre Dame Fighting Irish
 6 160 Ottawa 67’s Corey Cowick LW 0 N/A Binghamton Senators
7 190 Avon Old Farms Brad Peltz LW 0 N/A Unknown (Trenton Titans in 12/13)
 7 191 Lincoln Stars Michael Sdao D 0 N/A Binghamton Senators

Hound Power alumni FTW. With Wideman and Hoffman both having strong AHL campaigns, this draft class looks to be a stellar one for the Sens, even though they had trade away Silfverberg in order to get Bobby Ryan.

Philadelphia Flyers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 3 81 Saskatoon Blades Adam Morrison G 0 N/A South Carolina Stingrays
 3 87 Brynas Simon Bertilsson D 0 N/A Brynas
 5 142 Moncton Wildcats Nicola Riopel G 0 N/A Frederikshavn
 6 153 Shawinigan Cataractes Dave Labrecque C 0 N/A Briancon
6 172 Windsor Spitfires Eric Wellwood LW 31 5-5-10 Retired (Leg Injury in 2013)
7 196 St. Cloud State Huskies Oliver Lauridsen D 15 2-1-3 Adirondack Phantoms

Welp, since Wellwood had to retire, it’s up a to a late seventh round pick to save this draft class. I don’t think I like Philly’s chances.

Phoenix Coyotes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 6 Leksands Oliver Ekman-Larsson D 258 32-79-111 Phoenix Coyotes
 2 36 US NTDP Chris Brown C 17 1-1-2 Hershey Bears
 3 91 Fargo Force Mike Lee G 0 N/A Portland Pirates
4 97 Saginaw Spirit Jordan Szwarz RW 26 3-0-3 Portland Pirates
 4 105 Red Deer Rebels Justin Weller D 0 N/A Gwinnett Gladiators
6 157 Kelowna Rockets Evan Bloodoff LW 0 N/A Florida Everblades

Ekman-Larsson’s a stud on the blueline, and easily makes this draft a success. I’m hoping Mike Lee gets healthy at some point though, as he was a pretty decent goalie for St. Cloud State before Ryan Faragher took over.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 30 Saint John Sea Dogs Simon Despres D 85 3-13-16 Pittsburgh Penguins
 2 61 Chicago Steel Philip Samuelsson D 5 0-0-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
3 63 Little Falls High School Ben Hanowski RW 16 1-2-3 Abbotsford Heat
4 121 Shawinigan Cataractes Nick Petersen RW 0 N/A Schwennigen Wild Wings
 5 123 Delbarton High School Alex Velischek D 0 N/A Arizona Sundogs
5 151 Belleville Bulls Andy Bathgate LW 0 N/A Konigsborner
 6 181 Oskarshamn Viktor Ekbom D 0 N/A Orebro

Hey look, the Penguins drafted two defenders and dealt Hanowski for a rental player. Yippie! Though to be fair, I expect Despres will finally get a long look here before to long with the Penguins.

San Jose Sharks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 2 43 US NTDP William Wrenn D 0 N/A Texas Stars
 2 57 Kingston Frontenacs Taylor Doherty D 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
 5 146 London Knights Philip Varone C 9 1-1-2 Rochester Americans
 7 189 Prince George Cougars Marek Viedensky C 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
 7 207 Berlin Polar Bears Dominik Bielke D 0 N/A EHC Munich

This doesn’t look good at the moment, but I expect the 800 foot tall Doherty will finally get a chance to be in the Sharks before too long. I mean, how long can you let a guy as tall as he is hang around in the minors before he gets the KHL bug.

St. Louis Blues

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 17 Skelleftea David Rundblad D 55 1-8-9 Chicago Blackhawks
 2 48 Portland Winterhawks Brett Ponich D 0 N/A Kalamazoo Wings
3 78 Tolyatti Lada Sergei Andronov LW 0 N/A Chicago Wolves
4 108 Kamloops Blazers Tyler Shattock RW 0 N/A Chicago Wolves
 6 168 Erie Otters David Shields D 0 N/A Chicago Wolves
 7 202 Duluth East High School Maxwell Tardy C 0 N/A Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs

So what if Rundblad didn’t work out, the Blues have an exciting collection of AHLers in the system. What do you mean that’s not good?

Tampa Bay Lightning

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 2 Modo Victor Hedman D 333 29-115-144 Tampa Bay Lightning
1 29 Lethbridge Hurricanes Carter Ashton RW 47 0-3-3 Toronto Maple Leafs
2 52 Trinec Ocelari Richard Panik RW 75 8-14-22 Tampa Bay Lightning
4 93 Barrie Colts Alex Hutchings LW 0 N/A Rochester Americans
5 148 Oshawa Generals Michael Zador G 0 N/A Unknown (Owen Sound Attack in 10/11)
 6 162 Erie Otters Jaroslav Janus G 0 N/A Slovan Bratislava
 7 183 Shattuck St. Mary’s Kirill Gotovets D 0 N/A Cornell Big Red

I said this in a previous OHL draft recap, but how has Zador fallen off the face of the earth? Hedman started a bit slow, but had an awesome 13/14 season that proved his high draft pick. That Panik pick looks pretty solid as well.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 7 London Knights Nazem Kadri C 177 46-67-113 Toronto Maple Leafs
2 50 US NTDP Kenny Ryan RW 0 N/A Toronto Marlies
 2 58 Windsor Spitfires Jesse Blacker D 0 N/A Norfolk Admirals
3 68 Plymouth Whalers Jamie Devane LW 2 0-0-0 Toronto Marlies
5 128 Philadelphia Jr. Flyers Eric Knodel D 0 N/A New Hampshire Wildcats
 6 158 US NTDP Jerry D’Amigo LW 22 1-2-3 Toronto Marlies
 7 188 Peterborough Petes Barron Smith D 0 N/A Alberta Golden Bears

This is the first Burke draft, which led to the greatest exchange in NHL Draft history. With Kadri seemingly on the block now, this class looks a bit worse off if he’s gone, with D’Amigo the one somewhat impactful talent left in the system. On a side note, Burke seriously selected Barron Smith?

Vancouver Canucks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 22 Minnesota Golden Gophers Jordan Schroeder C 56 6-9-15 Vancouver Canucks
 2 53 Brynas Anton Rodin RW 0 N/A Brynas
 3 83 Western Michigan Broncos Kevin Connauton D 36 1-7-8 Dallas Stars
 4 113 Nepean Raiders Jeremy Price D 0 N/A South Carolina Stingrays
 5 143 Frolunda Peter Andersson D 0 N/A Utica Comets
 6 173 Merrimack Warriors Joe Cannata G 0 N/A Utica Comets
7 187 Saint John Sea Dogs Steven Anthony LW 0 N/A St. Charles Chill

I knew that Schroeder was one of the top American players in World Junior history, but I forgot how good his freshman season was with the Golden Gophers prior to being drafted.  At this point, it’s up to him to save the draft class for the Canucks, especially since Connauton was dealt for rent-a-player Derek Roy.

Washington Capitals

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 24 Farjestad Marcus Johansson C 263 41-98-139 Washington Capitals
 2 55 Novokuznetsk Metallurg Dmitri Orlov D 119 6-25-31 Washington Capitals
 3 85 Swift Current Broncos Cody Eakin C 159 27-40-67 Dallas Stars
 4 115 Waterloo Black Hawks Patrick Wey D 9 0-3-3 Hershey Bears
 5 145 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Brett Flemming D 0 N/A Reading Royals
 6 175 Regina Pats Garrett Mitchell D 0 N/A Hershey Bears
 7 205 PEI Rocket Benjamin Casavant LW 0 N/A Trois-Rivieres Vikings

And to finish things off, we have a pretty decent crop of players for the Capitals. Though how Casavant didn’t catch on with anyone after some pretty good junior numbers is beyond me.

A Look Back At The 2009 OHL Draft

crop_879326_27_1396624538

As I post this to the internet, the 2014 edition of the OHL Draft is just a few hours away from getting into full swing, with the Sarnia Sting having announced yesterday that highly-touted defender Jakob Chychrun would be the first overall selection in this year’s event.

In this instant access world, everyone wants to have a quick opinion on what each of the 20 teams does on draft day, but it’s pretty much impossible. The vast majority of us have yet to see those drafted in person, and our lone glimpse may only come from a YouTube highlight reel.

I have always been of the belief that you have to let at least five years pass before you make any final judgements on a draft, and with the 1993 birth-year players leaving the junior ranks, I figure this time is right to do my annual review of a previous OHL Draft by taking a look back at what happened in 2009.

Barrie Colts

 4 62 Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs Ryan Wells D  0 N/A London Nationals
 4 68 Hamilton Huskies Clint Windsor G  100 26-49-10 (4.24) Miramichi Timberwolves

 13 248 Toronto Young Nationals Tyson Fawcett C  130 35-40-75 Barrie Colts
14 268 Hamilton Huskies Mitchell Nardi C  0 N/A Lake Superior State Lakers
15 288 Upper Canada Cyclones Jarrett Williams D  0 N/A Unknown (Westport Rideaus in 12/13)
15 293 South Central Coyotes Michael Robinson LW  72 5-10-15 Wellington Dukes

Ryan Strome ended up becoming a star in the league, though that was after he was traded to Niagara in a deal that saw the Colts pick up Alex Pietrangelo at the 2010 trade deadline. The Zach Hall pick ended up being good in the long run though, and Tyson Fawcett was a nice snag in the late stages of the draft.

Belleville Bulls

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. OHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 18 Quinte Red Devils Tyson Teichmann  G  130 31-7-7 (4.01) Wellington Dukes
2 32 Toronto Marlboros Michael Curtis LW  311 80-75-185 Erie Otters
4 63 Toronto Marlboros Steven Strong D  228 12-35-47 Guelph Gryphons
 4 78 Mississauga Senators Alex Basso D  280 38-120-158 London Knights

 10 198 Ajax-Pickering Raiders Steven Deeg RW  0 N/A Wellington Dukes
 11 218 Toronto Marlboros Malcolm Subban G  118 64-42-6 (2.52) Boston Bruins Organization
 12 238 Brantford 99ers Dillan Walker D  0 N/A St. Catharines Falcons

 14 278 Ajax-Pickering Raiders Ryan Logan D  0 N/A Cobourg Cougars
15 298 Central Ontario Wolves Eric Wintjes D  0 N/A Unknown (Ottawa West Golden Knights in 12/13)

The Bulls did get a top-notch goalie in this draft, but it was in the 11th round and not with their first pick. Their next four picks were pretty solid as a whole after Teichmann though.

 15 289 Halton Hurricanes Spencer Abraham D  247 23-72-95 Erie Otters
15 297 Halton Hurricanes Nicholas Pierog RW  0 N/A Penticton Vees

This might be my favourite draft so far. All of the guys who stuck around in the OHL were solid players, and Spencer Abraham was a heck of a pick in the final round.

Erie Otters

While Erie’s draft isn’t that bad, most everyone that did something after they moved on from the Otters. That would certainly change in a few years time when that McJesus fellow came around.

The Julian Ciocco pick aside, this draft is a pretty good one. You have a pair of players who are key cogs in this year’s OHL title hunt, and an 8th round pick who was one of the top netminders in the league. Also, take a look at Nik Passero’s wonderful stache.

Oh Kingston. To be fair on this one, Palazeese thrived after he left town, Quine was dealt to get Ryan Spooner in a run during the 2010-11 season, Broek quit hockey after he was dealt to Belleville, and Morgan had concussion issues.

Now this is a draft. Solid OHL players from top to bottom, a top-line defender (though you could argue how much defending he did while he was free-wheeling) with their top pick, and John Freaking Gibson in the 11th round.

London Knights

 15 286 Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs Taylor Speed G  0 N/A Windsor Lancers

Perhaps they regret not having Dane Fox’s goals as an overager, but they got Greg McKegg for him so that’s not too bad. Scott Harrington became a leader at the back end, and for a fourth rounder, Seth Griffith was outstanding.

Yeah there’s a lot of guys who didn’t do much, but when you get two top-line defenders in Percy and DeMelo, I don’t think you can be that upset about how your draft went.

15 287 South Central Coyotes Christian Weidauer D  0 N/A Prince George Spruce Kings

Since Lucas Lessio didn’t play for Niagara at all (he was traded to Oshawa where he would end up playing in the OHL), that sort of takes away from how things went. Though Dougie Hamilton made up for it by playing like a first round selection during his time in the OHL. Di Giuseppe would of been fun to watch in this league, whether it had been for Niagara or Windsor where he rights were dealt later on.

I’ve waited for a heroic cross-sport athlete to show up, and we got one in a Ohio State lacrosse player. As per usual for the Petes at this point, this wasn’t the best of drafts, especially since their top pick in Puempel would end up being traded to Kitchener.

Loyola Marymount has a hockey team? Colour me impressed. Although Schiefele was dealt to Barrie before the start of the 2010-11 season for Mavric Parks, this draft was pretty good one. Plus, since Trocheck once won me five bucks in a NHL Draft bet, he always has a soft spot in my heart.

Two quick notes here. Firstly, I need to book Craig Hottot’s band. Secondly, there’s a hockey program at ECU? As for the draft, it’s not really all that hot after the Brett Ritchie pick, until you get to the final two players. This is what having Alex Galchenyuk and Nail Yakupov on your team can do for you.

Good old Patrick Volpe. As for this draft, Cat and Cousins were two really great picks, even if Catenacci was dealt to Owen Sound later on. Plus, here’s a friendly reminder that the draft pick that was used to pick up Ryan Sproul originally came from Barrie for Behn Robertson. Thanks again Colts brass.

A college baseball player? I love this draft already. Eric Locke, even though he was dealt, is an awesome 13th round pick, and while many of the other players were traded away, they were used to help the team pick up other players during their run as an elite team in the OHL. On a side note, if they were able to get a couple of those college players, the Spitfires would have been lethal after Ellis and Hall left.

And of course, we can’t wrap up our 2009 retrospective without taking a look at the CHL import draft.

Looking Back At The 2008 NHL Draft

46C15495DF49A2366890B57A6B6C

Depending on when you are reading this blog post we will either be waiting for, in the process of knowing, or debating for hours afterwards where the trio of Nathan MacKinnon (left), Seth Jones (centre), and Jonathan Drouin (right) will be playing their pro hockey following Sunday’s NHL Draft.

For the first time in a few years, there is actually a legit debate in my opinion as to who will go first overall in the draft, which makes it incredibly intriguing and highly entertaining to see what will actually happen.

Those question marks certainly weren’t around in 2008, when Steven Stamkos was pretty much pencilled into the top slot in the draft way before the Tampa Bay Lightning drafted him first overall. That pick has worked out quite well for the Bolts, as the former Sarnia Sting star has been lighting the lamp left, right and centre.

But how did the other 210 players that were selected pan out in the five years since? Well, ahead of this year’s draft, I have decided to again once take a look at how the teams did with their picks five years ago, and to determine what draft classes are looking good and looking poorly a little further down the line.

So without further delay, let’s get things going.

Anaheim Ducks

2 35 Chicoutimi Sagueneens Nicolas Deschamps LW 0 N/A Hershey Bears
 2 39 Sudbury Wolves Eric O’Dell C 0 N/A St. John’s IceCaps
 2 43 Westside Warriors Justin Schultz D 48 8-19-27 Edmonton Oilers
3 71 Kingston Fronteancs Josh Brittain LW 0 N/A Norfolk Admirals
 3 83 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Marco Cousineau G 0 N/A Fort Wayne Komets
3 85 Portland Pirates Brandon McMillan LW 91 11-15-26 Portland Pirates
 4 113 US NTDP Ryan Hegarty D 0 N/A Fort Wayne Komets
 5 143 Vasteras Jrs. Stefan Warg D 0 N/A Vasteras
 7 208 US NTDP Nick Pryor D 0 N/A Maine Black Bears

Well those two blueliners would of been alright I suppose, but alas, they are now playing elsewhere. Though the Fort Wayne Komets must love those two players from the ’08 Class that are now suiting up for them though.

Atlanta Thrashers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 3 Peterborough Petes Zach Bogosian D 297 34-69-103 Winnipeg Jets
1 29 St. Catharines Falcons Daultan Leveille C 0 N/A San Francisco Bulls
3 64 Lewiston Maineiacs Danick Paquette RW 0 N/A Reading Royals
4 94 US NTDP Vinny Saponari RW 0 N/A Northeastern Huskies
5 124 Frolunda Jrs. Nicklas Lasu LW 0 N/A Vastra Frolunda HC
 6 154 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Chris Carrozzi G 0 N/A Ontario Reign
 7 185 Ferris State Bulldogs Zach Redmond D 8 1-3-4 Winnipeg Jets

Maybe he hasn’t put up 60 some points like he did in junior, but Bogosian has done decent thus far with the Thrashers/Jets, and Redmond has done great for a seventh round pick. That Daultan Leveille pick though in the first round is staggering.

Boston Bruins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 16 Camrose Kodiaks Joe Colborne C 16 1-5-6 Toronto Marlies
 2 47 Val d’Or Foreurs Maxime Sauve C 1 0-0-0 Rockford IceHogs
 3 77 Barrie Colts Michael Hutchinson G 0 N/A Providence Bruins
 4 97 Sarnia Sting Jamie Arniel C 1 0-0-0 Berlin Polar Bears
 6 173 Smiths Falls Bears Nicolas Tremblay C 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
7 197 Choate Rosemary Hall Mike Goggin C 0 N/A Dartmouth Big Green

Colborne turned into Tomas Kaberle, who ended up winning a Cup for the Bruins in 2011 so that worked out alright. Otherwise, it’s all up to Michael Hutchinson to save the Bruins on this draft.

Buffalo Sabres

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 12 Kelowna Rockets Tyler Myers D 256 32-84-116 Buffalo Sabres
 1 26 Medicine Hat Tigers Tyler Ennis C 187 48-75-123 Buffalo Sabres
 2 44 St. John’s Fog Devils Luke Adam C 75 14-11-25 Rochester Americans
 3 81 Eastview High School Corey Fienhage D 0 N/A Gwinnett Gladiators

5 134 Chicoutimi Saguneneens Jacob Lagace LW 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
 6 164 Saginaw Spirit Nick Crawford D 0 N/A Rochester Americans

With the top three picks all making an impact at the pro level so far, the Sabres have the best looking draft to date. I am a tad bit bummed though that I couldn’t find out what happened to Jokinen after he finished up at Minnesota State.

Calgary Flames

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 25 Windsor Spitfires Greg Nemisz C 15 0-1-1 Abbotsford Heat
 2 48 Spokane Chiefs Mitch Wahl C 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
 3 78 Vancouver Giants Lance Bouma C 43 1-3-4 Abbotsford Heat
4 108 Waterloo Black Hawks Nick Larson LW 0 N/A Notre Dame Fighting Irish
 4 114 Saginaw Spirit T.J. Brodie D 104 4-24-28 Calgary Flames
 6 168 Moose Jaw Warriors Ryley Grantham C 0 N/A Houston Aeros
 7 198 Djurgarden Jrs. Alexander Deilert D 0 N/A Asploven HC

I should note here that I have a bit of a prospect crush on Greg Nemisz, so I really hope that the Flames give him a shot here soon. Brodie has been a pretty good player for a fourth rounder, and Lance Bouma might of had a full-time place on the Flames this year if he hadn’t suffered a knee injury for the Heat early in the season.

Carolina Hurricanes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 14 Lethbridge Hurricanes Zach Boychuk C 85 8-12-20 Charlotte Checkers
 2 45 Penticton Vees Zac Dalpe C 41 5-5-10 Charlotte Checkers
 4 105 Plymouth Whalers Michal Jordan D 5 0-0-0 Charlotte Checkers
 6 165 Belleville Bulls Mike Murphy G 2 0-1-0 (0.00) Charlotte Checkers
 7 195 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Samuel Morneau LW 0 N/A Unknown (Concordia Stingers in 11/12)

Since the former Hartford Whalers selected the great Mike Murphy, this draft is automatically a success. I have to say though, if the Checkers guys all got called up, they should do alright in the show in some way or another. Well, as long as Boychuk doesn’t go on a wavier travelling tour like he did this past season.

Chicago Blackhawks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 11 Everett Silvertips Kyle Beach LW 0 N/A Rockford IceHogs
 3 68 Belleville Bulls Shawn Lalonde D 1 0-0-0 Rockford IceHogs

 6 179 Oakville Blades Braden Birch D 0 N/A Cornell Big Red
 7 192 Edina High School Joe Gleason D 0 N/A North Dakota

Depending on what happens in the off-season, guys like Beach, Lalonde and Smith may finally get more of a chance to show what they can do in Chicago. But given the depth of this year’s Cup champions, it might be hard for them to break through.

Colorado Avalanche

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 2 50 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Cameron Gaunce D 11 1-0-1 Texas Stars
 2 61 Lewiston Maineiacs Peter Delmas G 0 N/A Wheeling Nailers

 6 170 Sarpsborg Jonas Holos D 39 0-6-6 Vaxjo HC
7 200 Wausau High School Nathan Condon C 0 N/A Minnesota Golden Gophers

Seeing that Gaunce is now in Dallas, this draft might not look all that great. However, Olver has done quite well in his role since finishing up at Northern Michigan, and Condon has played better and better during his career at Minnesota, so those late selections might prove to be some shrewd pickups.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status

6 157 Avon Old Farms Cam Atkinson RW 62 16-16-32 Columbus Blue Jackets
 7 187 Waywayseecappo Wolverines Sean Collins C 5 0-0-0 Springfield Falcons

Oh Nikita Filatov, how we hardly knew ye. Other than that train wreck of a pick, the late round selections of Calvert and Atkinson make this draft look pretty sharp. By the way, you need to check out Collins’ draft eligible season in the MJHL, because those stats are pretty crazy.

Dallas Stars

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 2 59 Owen Sound Attack Tyler Beskorowany G 0 N/A Idaho Steelheads
 3 89 Russell Stover Midgets Scott Winkler C 0 N/A Deceased (June 2013 – Unknown Causes)

6 176 Swift Current Broncos Matt Tassone LW 0 N/A Elmira Jackets
 7 209 Smiths Falls Bears Mike Bergin D 0 N/A Sodertalje SK

Given the amount of picks that they had, Larsen’s play so far makes this draft a good one. It is a shame that Winkler passed away though, as he could of made an impact in the Stars system or elsewhere after his time at Colorado College.

Detroit Red Wings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 30 Guelph Storm Thomas McCollum G 1 0-0-0 (12.00) Grand Rapids Griffins
 3 91 Chicago Steel Max Nicastro D 0 N/A Toledo Walleye

 6 181 Belleville Bulls Stephen Johnston C 0 N/A St. Mary’s Huskies
 7 211 Timra Jrs. Jesper Samuelsson C 0 N/A Vita Hasten

In a shocking development, a mid-round European draft pick by the Red Wings may become a key contributor to their team. What happens to everyone else remains to be seen, but it’s Detroit, like I am going to say anything bad about how they build their rosters.

Edmonton Oilers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 22 Regina Pats Jordan Eberle C 195 68-88-37 Edmonton Oilers

6 163 Kalpa Jrs. Teemu Hartikainen LW 52 6-7-13 Edmonton Oilers
7 193 Medicine Hat Tigers Jordan Bendfeld D 0 N/A Unknown (Stockton Thunder in 10/11)

Sure that Eberle guy might be decent, but since Finnish hero Hartikainen is off to the KHL next season, I will declare this draft a bust.

Florida Panthers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 2 31 Bryans Jrs. Jacob Markstrom G 31 10-19-2 (3.09) Florida Panthers

 4 100 Plymouth Whalers A.J. Jenks LW 0 N/A Florida Everblades
 7 190 Lincoln Stars Matt Bartkowski D 20 0-2-2 Boston Bruins

Let’s hope that Markstrom gets a chance to start full-time soon or he is free to go elsewhere to ply his trade. For other than that, this draft hasn’t been quite the best for the Panthers, though Robak is doing okay I guess.

Los Angeles Kings

 6 153 Kitchener Rangers Justin Azevedo C 0 N/A Lukko Rauma
7 183 St. Cloud State Huskies Garrett Roe LW 0 N/A Adirondack Phantoms

In another shocking development, the Kings had a good draft. However, they did deal away one of my favourite Russians in Andrei Loktionov, so that does affect my feelings on it a little bit.

At what point can we call Tyler Cuma a bust? Thank goodness for Scandella, or this might be along the lines of the 2006 Tampa Bay Lightning draft.

Alright Danny Kristo, it’s all up to you to save this draft class. However, after a great career at North Dakota, I think you should do just fine.

 5 142 Oshawa Generals Kory Nagy C 0 N/A Trenton Titans
 6 172 US NTDP David Wohlberg C 0 N/A Albany Devils
 7 202 Kalamazoo Wings Harry Young D 0 N/A Kalamazoo Wings
 7 205 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Jean-Sebastien Berube LW 0 N/A Trenton Titans

I should state that I have a massive man-crush on Adam Henrique, so I love this draft already. In all seriousness though, if everything works out with the guys still in their system, this draft might prove to be a decent one.

New York Islanders

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 9 Windsor Spitfires Joshua Bailey C 329 58-81-139 New York Islanders
 2 36 Stouffville Spirit Corey Trivino C 0 N/A Florida Everblades
2 40 Roseau High School Aaron Ness D 9 0-0-0 Bridgeport Sound Tigers
2 53 Moose Jaw Warriors Travis Hamonic D 183 10-50-60 New York Islanders

 3 72 Saskatoon Blades Jyri Niemi D 0 N/A Greenville Road Warriors

4 96 Cedar Rapids Roughriders Matt Donovan D 3 0-0-0 Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 4 102 HV71 Jrs. David Ullstrom C 49 6-7-13 New York Islanders
 5 126 Victoriaville Tigres Kevin Poulin G 21 7-9-1 (2.76) New York Islanders
5 148 Sarnia Sting Matt Martin LW 201 16-25-41 New York Islanders
 6 156 Spokane Chiefs Jared Spurgeon D 162 12-38-50 Minnesota Wild
6 175 Sarnia Sting Justin DiBenedetto LW 8 0-1-1 Salzburg EC

What’s this? The Islanders had a pretty decent draft? I have to sit down, the room is spinning all of a sudden.

New York Rangers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 20 Oshawa Generals Michael Del Zotto D 250 24-86-110 New York Rangers
 2 51 Shattuck St. Mary’s Derek Stepan C 212 56-84-140 New York Rangers
3 75 Yaroslavl Jrs. Evgeny Grachev LW 34 1-3-4 Peoria Rivermen
 3 90 Trinec Ocelari HC Tomas Kundratek D 30 1-6-7 Hershey Bears
4 111 Swift Current Broncos Dale Weise RW 118 7-7-14 Vancouver Canucks
 5 141 PEI Rocket Chris Doyle C 0 N/A Allen Americans
 6 171 Erie Otters Mitch Gaulton D 0 N/A Unknown (Brock Badgers in 11/12)

After two very strong picks to start things off, you can be excused for not letting the rest of your players pan out or stay in your system.

Ottawa Senators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 15 Frolunda Jrs. Erik Karlsson D 233 43-120-163 Ottawa Senators
 2 42 Omaha Lancers Patrick Wiercioch D 50 5-16-21 Ottawa Senators
 3 79 Swift Current Broncos Zack Smith C 200 24-29-52 Ottawa Senators
 4 109 HV71 Jrs. Andre Petersson RW 1 0-0-0 Binghamton Senators
 4 119 Langley Chiefs Derek Grant C 5 0-0-0 Binghamton Senators
 5 139 Smiths Falls Bears Mark Borowiecki D 8 0-0-0 Binghamton Senators
7 199 Brynas IF Gavle Emil Sandin LW 0 N/A Almtuna IS

The hits just keep on coming as the Senators have another solid draft. Apparently, that Karlsson guy is offensively minded. Who knew.

Philadelphia Flyers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 19 Lethbridge Hurricanes Luca Sbisa D 236 8-42-50 Anaheim Ducks
 3 67 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Marc-Andre Bourdon D 45 4-3-7 Adirondack Phantoms
 3 84 Seattle Thunderbirds Jacob De Serres G 0 N/A Calgary Dinos
6 178 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Zac Rinaldo LW 98 5-9-14 Philadelphia Flyers
 7 196 Brynas Jrs. Joacim Eriksson G 0 N/A Skelleftea HC

Since Sbisa was dealt away for Chris Pronger, this draft is kind of an interesting one to debate in hindsight. However, we can agree that both goalies were doomed to fail after being picked by the Flyers.

Phoenix Coyotes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 8 Kitchener Rangers Mikkel Boedker LW 256 34-61-95 Phoenix Coyotes
1 28 Cherepovets Severstal Viktor Tikhonov LW 61 8-8-16 St. Petersburg SKA
2 49 Sudbury Wolves Jared Staal RW 2 0-0-0 Charlotte Checkers
 3 69 Calgary Hitmen Michael Stone D 53 6-6-12 Phoenix Coyotes
3 76 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles Mathieu Brodeur D 0 N/A Portland Pirates
 4 99 Kelowna Rockets Colin Long C 0 N/A Dusseldorf EG
6 159 Penticton Vees Brett Hextall RW 0 N/A Portland Pirates
 7 189 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Tim Billingsley D 0 N/A Carleton Ravens

Poor Viktor Tikhonov. With Boedker and Stone though, this draft isn’t too shabby overall.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 4 120 Kingston Frontenacs Nathan Moon C 0 N/A Evansville Icemen
 5 150 Magnitogorsk Jr. Alexandre Pechurskiy G 0 N/A Yuzhny Ural Orsk
 6 180 Brampton Battalion Patrick Killeen G 0 N/A Orlando Solar Bears
 7 210 St. Michael’s Buzzers Nicholas D’Agostino D 0 N/A Cornell Big Red

Even though I am a Penguins fan, this draft ranks right up there with that 2006 Tampa Bay train wreck. Though I suppose D’Agostino could win 8 Norris Trophies (Lucas cries himself to sleep).

San Jose Sharks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 3 62 Kent High School Justin Daniels C 0 N/A Elmira Jackets
 4 92 Quebec Remparts Samuel Groulx D 0 N/A Moncton Aigles Bleu
 4 106 Tappara Jrs. Harri Sateri G 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
 5 146 Ottawa 67’s Julien Demers D 0 N/A Ottawa Gee-Gees
 6 177 Miami RedHawks Tommy Wingels C 80 8-14-22 San Jose Sharks
 7 186 Victoriaville Tigres Jason Demers D 205 11-50-61 San Jose Sharks
7 194 Kent High School Drew Daniels RW 0 N/A Allen Americans

The selections of Wingels and Demers late in the draft are quite impressive. Now if only they did that well with their other picks.

St. Louis Blues

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 4 Niagara IceDogs Alex Pietrangelo D 224 29-92-221 St. Louis Blues
 2 33 London Knights Phil McRae C 15 1-2-3 Peoria Rivermen
 2 34 St. John’s Fog Devils Jake Allen G 15 9-4-1 (2.46) St. Louis Blues
 3 65 Tappara Tampere Jori Lehtera C 0 N/A Novosibirsk Siber
3 70 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds James Livingston RW 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
3 87 Calgary Hitmen Ian Schultz RW 0 N/A San Francisco Bulls
 4 95 US NTDP David Warsofsky D 0 N/A Providence Bruins
 5 125 Bjorkloven IF Kristoffer Berglund D 0 N/A Vaxjo HC
6 155 Guelph Storm Anthony Nigro LW 0 N/A Peoria Rivermen
 7 185 Wellington Dukes Paul Karpowich G 0 N/A Evansville Icemen

Those first three picks were quite good. After that though, not so much.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 1 Sarnia Sting Steven Stamkos C 373 208-178-386 Tampa Bay Lightning
 4 117 Vancouver Giants James Wright C 87 4-6-10 Winnipeg Jets
 5 122 Spokane Chiefs Dustin Tokarski G 0 N/A Hamilton Bulldogs
5 147 Brampton Battalion Kyle DeCoste RW 0 N/A Western Mustangs
 6 152 Moncton Wildcats Mark Barberio D 2 0-0-0 Syracuse Crunch
6 160 Ohio Junior Blue Jackets Luke Witkowski D 0 N/A Western Michigan Broncos
7 182 Ilves Jrs. Matias Sointu LW 0 N/A Ilves Tampere
7 203 Shattuck St. Mary’s David Carle D 0 N/A Green Bay Gamblers Assistant Coach

When you have someone like Stamkos producing like he has so far, it really doesn’t matter how the rest of the draft goes after that. Though with Tokarski being in this draft class, I get to reference this classic Pierre McGuire moment.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 5 Kelowna Rockets Luke Schenn D 357 17-69-86 Philadelphia Flyers
2 60 Lincoln Stars Jimmy Hayes RW 41 6-7-13 Rockford IceHogs
 4 98 Quebec Remparts Mikhail Stefanovich C 0 N/A HK Gomel
5 128 Ohio Junior Blue Jackets Greg Pateryn D 3 0-0-0 Hamilton Bulldogs
 5 129 Chicoutimi Sagueneens Joel Champagne C 0 N/A Reading Royals
5 130 Cologne Sharks Jerome Flakke RW 0 N/A Hamburg Freezers
 6 158 Trail Smoke Eaters Grant Rollheister G 0 N/A Wichita Thunder
 7 188 Camrose Kodiaks Andrew MacWilliam D 0 N/A North Dakota

Man did Stefanovich ever fall off the face of the earth after playing in Quebec. Oh, as for the rest of the picks, well it’s your typical Leafs draft at this point in time, though Schenn did turn into Van Riemdsyk. I can’t wait for next year’s recap though, as we start to take a look at the Brian Burke era.

Vancouver Canucks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 10 Brampton Battalion Cody Hodgson C 139 35-42-77 Buffalo Sabres
2 41 Saint John Sea Dogs Yann Sauve D 5 0-0-0 Kalamazoo Wings
 5 131 Seattle Thunderbirds Prabh Rai C 0 N/A Kalamazoo Wings
 6 161 Linkoping Jr. Mats Froshaug C 0 N/A Lorenskog
 7 191 Red Deer Rebels Morgan Clark G 0 N/A St. Francis Xavier X-Men

I still think that Buffalo got the better player in the trade for Zack Kassian during the 2012 trade deadline, so that might not work out well for Vancouver. The rest of the draft is pretty rough looking, so no wonder the Canucks farm system isn’t the greatest at the moment.

Washington Capitals

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 21 Frolunda Jrs. Anton Gustafsson C 0 N/A Asploven HC
 1 27 Indiana Ice John Carlson D 234 23-74-97 Washington Capitals
 2 57 Tri-City Americans Eric Mestery D 0 N/A Manitoba Bisons
2 58 CSKA Jr. Dimitri Kugryshev RW 0 N/A CSKA Moscow
 4 93 Saskatoon Blades Braden Holtby G 57 37-16-11 (2.39) Washington Capitals
 5 144 Moose Jaw Warriors Joel Broda C 0 N/A Houston Aeros
6 174 New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs Greg Burke LW 0 N/A New Hampshire Wildcats
7 204 Barrie Colts Stefan Della Rovere LW 7 0-0-0 Peoria Rivermen

With Carlson and Holtby both doing well for the big club, this draft worked out alright for Washington. Though that Anton Gustaffson pick is a pretty big miscue.

Anyways, that concludes this annual train wreck. Hopefully, this year’s draft provides with us with a ton of entertainment, and all of the players get a chance to show what they can do in the year’s to come.

Though I should note that whoever takes Soo Greyhounds forward Sergey Tolchinsky wins the draft. Russia Best.

A Look Back At The 2008 OHL Draft

Konecny_OTT_Draft3359

As per usual, Saturday’s OHL Priority Selection was the usual train wreck of wackiness. From Travis Konecny (pictured above) going to Ottawa with the first overall pick, to exceptional status player Sean Day falling to Mississauga at four, and the sons of both Keith Tkachuk and Martin Brodeur both being drafter, it had everything.

Being that the art of drafting players when they are 16 years of age is such a crapshoot, it is pretty much near impossible to try and breakdown what teams did good or poorly until much farther down the line.

In saying that however, I have decided to once again take a look back at a previous OHL Draft, and this time around it’s the 2008 version of the draft, which features those born in 1992 who are now leaving the junior hockey ranks.

Barrie Colts

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. OHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 6 Toronto Jr. Canadiens Ryan O’Connor RD 309 58-145-203 Barrie Colts
 2 11 Brantford 99’ers David Mazurek LC  105 11-17-28 Victoria Grizzlies
3 13 Halton Hurricanes Michael Sgarbossa LC  263 113-166-279 Colorado Avalanche Organization
4 6 Detroit Belle Tire U16’s Dean Pawlaczyk LW  94 2-7-9 Western Mustangs
5 6 Central Ontario Wolves Mitch Bennett RD  111 4-8-12 St. Catharines Falcons
 6 1 Vaughan Kings Dalton McGrath G  24 18-5-0 (2.71) Brock University
7 6 Stouffville Spirit Darren Archibald LW  186 92-82-174 Vancouver Canucks Organization
 8  7 Detroit Compuware U16’s Carter Foguth RD  0 N/A Minnesota State
 9 6 Detroit Honeybaked U16’s Willie Yanakeff G 0 N/A Michigan State
10 6 Toronto Marlboros Anthony Dotchison RD  0 N/A Unknown (Toronto Jr. Canadiens in 10/11)
11 6 Windsor Evan Rutckyj RD 0 N/A Charleston Riverdogs (New York Yankees Pitching Prospect)
12 5 Toronto Marlboros Taylor Burden LW 0 N/A Ohio State
 12 6 Ottawa Valley Joshua O’Keefe LD  0 N/A Unknown
13 6 York Simcoe Express Chris Chiste LC  7 0-0-0 Newmarket Hurricanes
14 6 Kitchener Rangers Tanner Pearson LW  126 52-81-133 Los Angeles Kings Organization
15 6 Central Ontario Wolves Matt Davis RC  0 N/A Whitby Fury

A pretty good draft for top to bottom. Most of the top players like Sgarbossa and Archibald were traded later on, but they helped to build the squad, and Pearson was a classic case of a late bloomer. Also, Evan Rutckyj might be my favourite draft pick of all time.

Belleville Bulls

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. OHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 19 Halton Hurricanes Stephen Silas LD 324 22-142-164 Belleville Bulls
4 2 Team Maryland U16 Scott Howe RW  102 7-5-12 Unknown (Belleville Bulls in 09/10)
 5 9 Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs Brandon Stewart RW  2 0-0-0 Elmira Sugar Kings

15 13 Cambridge Hawks Brayden McLean RD  0 N/A Unknown (Soo Thunderbirds in 11/12)
15 19 Oakville Jacob Liptok RD  0 N/A Unknown (Brampton Capitals in 10/11)

Given the fact that this was in the middle of the Bulls run as an Eastern Conference juggernaut, this draft isn’t the best in hindsight. However, Silas played for five years in Bellevegas, so you can’t complain about that.

Brampton Battalion

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. OHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status

14 1 Vaughan Kings Michael Lucifora RW  0 N/A St. Thomas Stars
14 15 The Gunnery Thane Heller LC  0 N/A Army
15 15 Toronto Jr. Canadiens Michael Sullivan LD  0 N/A Bowling Green

With many of their longer lasting picks serving their entire time in the OHL with Brampton, I don’t think you can really complain about this draft all that much. Plus, who doesn’t love a player that is now plying his trade in Sweden.

 15 12 North York Rangers Taylor Clements RW  5 0-1-1 Queen’s University

Quite an interesting draft here. You have guys that made an impact in Guelph, and other guys who played elsewhere that gave the Storm assets later on. It’s a shame though that Palmieri never made his way there though.

Vintage Fronts. Gudbranson’s in the show now so that pick worked out quite well, but as per usual the rest didn’t work out great. Mind you Charlie Sarault turned out fantastic, but he was playing in Sarnia at that point.

Kitchener Rangers

 15 20 Team Maryland U16 David Bondra LW  0 N/A Michigan State

Compared to some other drafts, this isn’t the best when it comes on depth. But when you hit on a guy like Skinner, I think you can call this draft a winner.

Though Thomas was traded to Oshawa in his rookie year to pick up John Tavares, the top four picks were fantastic for the Knights. Plus, you can’t complain about selecting a guy like Tyler Ferry in the 15th round.

This is sort of similar to the London Knights draft, minus the Tyler Ferry pick. The top three pick all did well for Niagara, but other than that, not so much.

Oshawa Generals

Now this isn’t quite as bad as Erie’s draft, but this is quite close. Thankfully, things would turn around in the next couple of years.

Ottawa 67’s

That Tyler Toffoli guy was rather good, and overall, this draft wasn’t too bad. Sure the bottom half was messy, but the top five picks all played in the OHL so you can’t be angry with that.

Owen Sound Attack

14 3 Mississauga Senators Taylor Lukasik RW  0 N/A Medical Student in Ireland

That medical student tidbit on Taylor Lukasik might be one of my favourite random notes yet. Overall, this draft was pretty good for the Attack, and it could have been even better if Matthew Krug had decided not to take the college route.

Peterborough Petes

 14 5 Peterborough Petes Charlie Millen G  2 0-0-0 (5.22) Ottawa Jr. Senators
15 3 Milwaukee Jr. Admirals Garrett Allen RW  0 N/A Denver

Given the Petes’ current situation, this draft was about pair for the course. Most of the guys who ended up in the OHL were eventually traded elsewhere, and Spooner himself was part of a continuing trend of Petes first rounders who would be dealt.

Well I’m not sure whatever became of that Seguin guy, but this draft was pretty good from top to bottom for those that made the show. But had they gotten a few of those college commitments to turn up, this draft could of been amazing.

Not the best of drafts here for Sarnia. Alderson broke out, but that was with the Greyhounds, and Sutch was a good five year player as was Charlitti, but you can see why the Sting had a rough patch soon afterwards.

Both Archibald and Beukeboom had great second years in the Soo, but both would be dealt soon afterwards, and while Dubchak had a nice sting with the Greyhounds, there wasn’t much here. It would have been cool to see Andy Iles play there mind you.

When your first five picks help your team to nearly winning an OHL title in 2011, and your 14th rounder plays over 200 games in the league, you can make a case for having the best draft in 2008. It’s a shame Bryan Rust never played in the league though, as I could have made a bunch of terrible Rust Never Sleeps jokes.

Oh Johnny Mac, how we hardly knew ye. That first overall pick was kind of a microcosm for this draft for the Wolves as their picks either underperformed, thrive elsewhere, or never even had a sniff in the OHL.

After two awesome drafts, this one doesn’t quite match up. However, Fowler and Campbell were good while they were there for a brief time (though you can argue how good Campbell was in while in Windsor and the Soo), and Watson ended up being traded to the Petes to pick up Kassian. Also, that Posa pick in the 15th is quite awesome.

And to finish things off, here is what happened in the 2008 CHL Import Draft.

You mean to tell me the OHL could of had Nikita Filatov and Erik Karlsson at one point? Well colour me disappointed, despite the fact that Grubauer was drafted.

A Look Back At The 2007 NHL Draft

One of my favourite days of the year is the NHL Draft. There’s a couple of reasons for this. One being the fact that you get to say goodbye to your favourite junior-aged players before they head off into the pro ranks (either right away or in a couple of years), while the other reason is the fact that I get to use this photo once a year.

Greatest Draft Pick Of Our Time

As I always do around this time of year, I have decided to take another look back at the draft that took place five years, and see what teams did well or failed miserably.

So without further ado, let’s get this rolling.

Anaheim Ducks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 19 Halifax Mooseheads Logan MacMillan LW 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
2 42 Belleville Bulls Eric Tangradi LW 40 1-4-5 Pittsburgh Penguins
 3 63 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Maxime Macenauer C 29 1-3-4 St. John’s IceCaps
4 92 US NTDP Justin Vaive LW 0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
 4 93 Michigan Wolverines Steven Kampfer D 61 7-8-15 Minnesota Wild
 4 98 Berlin Polar Bears Sebastian Stefaniszin G 0 N/A Vienna Capitals
 4 121 Lulea HF Mattias Modig G 0 N/A Vaxjo
5 151 PEI Rocket Brett Morrison C 0 N/A St. Francis Xavier University

Well Tanger is a true cult hero for the Penguins. But other than that, good god, this draft class didn’t work out at all for the Ducks. Only Vaive is still in the organization as of writing.

Atlanta Thrashers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
3 67 Vancouver Giants Spencer Machacek RW 25 2-7-9 St. John’s IceCaps
4 115 Tappara Tampere Niclas Lucenius C  0 N/A Riga Dynamo
6 175 US NTDP John Albert C  0 N/A St. John’s IceCaps
7 205 Swift Current Broncos Paul Postma D  4 0-0-0 St. John’s IceCaps

29 games played in the show, and nine points between the four picks. Michael Fine work boys. I will say though that Postma and Machacek have been quite serviceable in the AHL though for the new Jets.

Boston Bruins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 8 Everett Silvertips Zach Hamill C 20 0-4-4 Providence Bruins
2 35 Westminster High School Tommy Cross D 0 N/A Boston College
5 130 Heilbronn Falcons Denis Reul D 0 N/A Mannheim Eagles
6 159 Aurora Tigers Alain Goulet D 0 N/A Cincinnati Cyclones
6 169 Vsetin HC Radim Ostrcil D 0 N/A Brno Kometa
7 189 Moose Jaw Warriors Jordan Knackstedt RW 0 N/A Bolzano HC

Hamill will eventually get into the Bruins forward core, if not for another team, and Tommy Cross played a little bit in the AHL after the season ended for Boston College. Nothing doing though for the other four draft picks.

Buffalo Sabres

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 2 31 St. John’s Fog Devils T.J. Brennan D 11 1-0-1 Rochester Americans
 2 59 Mississauga IceDogs Drew Schiestel D 0 N/A Texas Stars
3 89 Sioux Falls Stampede Corey Tropp RW 34 3-5-8 Buffalo Sabres
5 139 Okotoks Oilers Bradley Eidsness G 0 N/A North Dakota Fighting Sioux
 5 147 St. John’s Fog Devils Jean-Simon Allard C 0 N/A Saguenay Marquis
 6 179 Gatineau Olympiques Paul Byron C 30 4-3-7 Abbotsford Heat
 7 187 Green Mountain Nick Eno G 0 N/A Mississippi Surge
7 209 Taft High School Drew Mackenzie D 0 N/A University of Vermont

Those that are still in the Sabres system are doing okay, as Tropp made a nice impact during his call up since last season. Plus, any draft class that features a guy that is now playing in the Quebec senior brawl-for-all league is one I can get behind.

Calgary Flames

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 24 Vasteras IK Mikael Backlund C 138 15-31-46 Calgary Flames
3 70 Kootenay Ice John Negrin D  3 0-1-1 St. John’s IceCaps
4 116 Brandon Wheat Kings Keith Aulie D 76 2-3-5 Tampa Bay Lightning
5 143 Windsor Spitfires Mickey Renaud C 0 N/A Deceased (February 2008 – Heart Condition)
7 186 US NTDP C.J. Severyn LW 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies

I am hoping that Backlund will start to get more of a chance to show what he can do going forward, as he’s basically the lone guy left from the draft class that can make any impact with this team.

Carolina Hurricanes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 11 Red Deer Rebels Brandon Sutter C 286 53-54-107 Carolina Hurricanes
3 72 Spokane Chiefs Drayson Bowman LW 69 8-8-16 Carolina Hurricanes
4 102 Saskatoon Blades Justin McCrae C 0 N/A University of British Columbia
5 132 Plymouth Whalers Chris Terry LW 0 N/A Charlotte Checkers
 6 162 Plymouth Whalers Brett Bellemore D 0 N/A Charlotte Checkers

So far, this is the clear cut winner for the best draft. Sutter has been a steady hand thus for the former Whalers, Bowman’s getting some more opportunities, and Chris Terry has been great in the AHL, so hopefully he will get a look in the show soon. Justin McCrae on the other hand, not so much.

Chicago Blackhawks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 1 London Knights Patrick Kane RW 399 126-243-369 Chicago Blackhawks
2 38 Colorado College Billy Sweatt LW  2 0-0-0 Chicago Wolves
2 56 Sudbury Wolves Akim Aliu RW  2 2-1-3 Abbotsford Heat
 3 69 Rimouski Oceanic Maxime Tanguay C  0 N/A St. Georges Cool 103.5 FM
3 86 US NTDP Josh Unice G  0 N/A University of Western Ontario
 5 126 US NTDP Joe Lavin D  0 N/A Rockford IceHogs
6 156 Windsor Spitfires Richard Greenop RW  0 N/A Toronto Marlies

After drafting Kane, the Blackhawks brass must of got their drinking on with their first overall pick, as nothing else has really happened with the guys since. And those that have played a bit in the show (Sweatt and Aliu) are now with other teams. On the bright side, Tanguay has the best team name thus far.

 6 155 Frolunda Jrs. Jens Hellgren D  0 N/A Mora IK
 7 195 Brynas IF Gavle Johan Alcen C  0 N/A Mora IK

Similar to a couple of other teams so far, the players that were drafted and did well are now gone. However, they did get Jamie McGinn, Michael Sgarbossa (OHL God), Mike Connolly (a Minnesota-Duluth hero), Erik Johnson and Jay McClement out of the deals for Shattenkirk and Galiardi, so it worked in that sense. Patterson and Carey just finished up their college tenures as well, so it will be interesting to see how they do.

(By the way, in an unrelated tidbit, go take a gander at the Trevor Cann trade from the Petes to London a few years ago. Some might call that a fleecing).

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 7 Halifax Mooseheads Jakub Voracek RW 319 57-126-183 Philadelphia Flyers
2 37 Mississauga IceDogs Stefan Legein RW 0 N/A Manchester Monarchs
 2 53 Gaylord High School Will Weber D 0 N/A Miami (Ohio)
3 68 Sioux Falls Stampede Jake Hansen RW 0 N/A Minnesota Golden Gophers
4 94 Leninogorsk Maksim Mayorov LW 22 2-1-3 Springfield Falcons
 6 158 Camrose Kodiaks Allen York G 11 3-2-0 (2.30) Columbus Blue Jackets
7 211 St. Louis Bandits Trent Vogelhuber RW 0 N/A Miami (Ohio)

I am noticing a trend here when it comes to people trading prospects before the five-year mark. Again, it’ll be interesting to see how the former college kids do, but at least the Blue Jackets once had Vintage Gino Reda.

Dallas Stars

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
2 50 Virginia High School Nico Sacchetti C 0 N/A Minnesota Golden Gophers
3 64 Moscow Dynamo Sergei Korostin RW 0 N/A HC VMF St. Petersburg
4 112 Portland Winter Hawks Colton Sceviour RW 1 0-0-0 Texas Stars
5 128 Gunnery Prep Austin Smith RW 0 N/A Colgate University
5 129 Victoria Grizzlies Jamie Benn LW 222 70-90-160 Dallas Stars
5 136 Spokane Chiefs Ondrej Roman LW  0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
5 149 Belleville Bulls Michael Neal LW  0 N/A Idaho Steelheads
6 172 Erie Otters Luke Gazdic LW  0 N/A Texas Stars

Jamie Benn was one heck of a fifth round pick. The rest of the draft on the other hand? Not so much.

Detroit Red Wings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 27 St. Michael’s Buzzers Brendan Smith D 14 1-6-7 Detroit Red Wings
 3 88 Frolunda Jrs. Joakim Andersson C  5 0-0-0 Grand Rapids Griffins
 5 148 Moncton Wildcats Randy Cameron C  0 N/A St. Thomas University
 6 178 Erie Otters Zach Torquato C  0 N/A Wheeling Nailers
 7 208 Lindsay Muskies Bryan Rufenach D  0 N/A Deceased (June 2012 – Electrocution)

With that Nick Lind fellow hanging it up, Smith will get more of a chance on the blueline for the Wings going forward. And while Andersson hasn’t played a lot yet, he will probably win at least four Selke trophies in the future being an European pick.

Edmonton Oilers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 6 London Knights Sam Gagner C 366 77-143-220 Edmonton Oilers
 1 15 Calgary Hitmen Alex Plante D  10 0-2-2 Oklahoma City Barons
 1 21 Salmon Arm Silverbacks Riley Nash C  5 0-1-1 Charlotte Checkers
4 97 Lulea HF Linus Omark LW  65 8-22-30 Oklahoma City Barons
 5 127 Topolcany Milan Kytnar C 1 0-0-0 HPK Hameenlinna
 6 157 Tingsryds William Quist LW  0 N/A Bjorkloven

Linus Omark is a hero. As for the rest of the draft, it’s not too shabby I guess. Gagner’s been pretty decent (an 8-point game helps out), plus Plante has been serviceable in the minors.

Florida Panthers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 10 Kamloops Blazers Keaton Ellerby D 116 2-15-17 Florida Panthers
2 40 Vancouver Giants Michal Repik RW  72 9-11-20 Florida Panthers
3 71 Chelyabinsk Traktor Evgeny Dadonov RW  55 10-10-20 Charlotte Checkers
 4 101 US NTDP Matt Rust C  0 N/A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
5 131 Waterloo Black Hawks John Lee D 0 N/A University of Denver
 6 181 Guelph Storm Corey Syvret D  0 N/A Trenton Titans
7 191 Cambridge High School Ryan Watson LW  0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
 7 202 Yaroslavl Jrs. Sergei Gayduchenko G  0 N/A CSKA Moscow

The top two picks are contributing already. As for the rest, not so much, especially since Dadonov has been traded.

Los Angeles Kings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 4 Seattle Thunderbirds Thomas Hickey D 0 N/A Manchester Monarchs
 2 52 Chilliwack Bruins Oscar Moller C 87 12-14-26 Skelleftea HC
2 61 Owen Sound Attack Wayne Simmonds RW  322 67-75-142 Philadelphia Flyers
3 82 Belleville Bulls Bryan Cameron RW  0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
 4 95 Miami (Ohio) Alec Martinez D  115 11-17-28 Los Angeles Kings
 4 109 Lethbridge Hurricanes Dwight King C  33 5-9-14 Los Angeles Kings
5 124 Regina Pats Linden Rowat G  0 N/A Unknown (University of Alberta in 10/11)
5 137 Waterloo Black Hawks Joshua Turnbull C  0 N/A South Carolina Stingrays
7 184 Erie Otters Josh Kidd D  0 N/A University of New Brunswick
7 188 St. John’s Fog Devils Matt Fillier LW  0 N/A University of New Brunswick

There’s a reason why the Kings were Cup champions this year (Well, besides a hot goalie and the gloriousness that is the playoffs which make a regular season mean nothing), and that is good drafting and depth. I mean, just look at Thomas Hickey, a fourth overall pick and he’s still stuck in the AHL.

Minnesota Wild

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 16 Saskatoon Blades Colton Gillies LW 127 5-11-16 Columbus Blue Jackets
 4 110 Spokane Chiefs Justin Falk D  72 11-11-12 Minnesota Wild
 5 140 Kelowna Rockets Cody Almond C  25 2-0-2 Houston Aeros
 6 170 Tappara Jrs. Harri Ilvonen D  0 N/A Blues
 7 200 Calgary Hitmen Carson McMillan C  15 2-3-5 Houston Aeros

For only five picks, I don’t think the Wild did too bad here. And anyone who is now playing in Finland full time helps things out in my mind.

Montreal Canadiens

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 12 Cretin Derham Hall High School Ryan McDonagh D 122 8-33-41 New York Rangers
1 22 Sioux City Musketeers Max Pacioretty LW 202 53-61-114 Montreal Canadiens
 2 43 Belleville Bulls P.K. Subban D 160 21-55-76 Montreal Canadiens

 6 163 HV 71 Jrs. Nichlas Torp D 0 N/A Timra IK
 7 192 Virginia High School Scott Kishel D 0 N/A Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs

Although they traded McDonagh, their three other picks that have played in the league have all made an impact. Overall, this might be the best draft so far.

Nashville Predators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 23 Vancouver Giants Jonathon Blum D 58 6-9-15 Milwaukee Admirals
 2 54 Plymouth Whalers Jeremy Smith G 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
 2 58 Kitchener Rangers Nick Spaling C 179 18-21-39 Nashville Predators
3 81 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Ryan Thang RW 1 0-0-0 Milwaukee Admirals
 4 114 Des Moines Buccaneers Ben Ryan C 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
4 119 Chilliwack Bruins Mark Santorelli LW 0 N/A Tingsryds AIF
5 144 Malmo IF Andreas Thuresson RW 25 1-2-3 Connecticut Whale
 6 174 DEG Metro Stars Robert Dietrich D 0 N/A Deceased (Plane Crash – September 2011)
 7 204 Lukko Rauma Atte Engren G 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals

Similar to the Kings, the Preds have so much depth that most of their draft picks are unable to crack their way into the lineup yet, besides Spaling of course. Another sign of a great team.

New Jersey Devils

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
2 57 US NTDP Mike Hoeffel LW 0 N/A Albany Devils
3 79 Erie Otters Nick Palmieri RW 87 13-12-25 Houston Aeros
 3 87 Cowichan Valley Capitals Corbin McPherson D 0 N/A Colgate University
4 117 Kitchener Rangers Matt Halischuk RW 121 20-23-43 Nashville Predators
 6 177 Pelicans Vili Sopanen RW 0 N/A Pelicans
7 207 Swift Current Broncos Ryan Molle D 0 N/A University Of Waterloo

Sure it’s not the sharpest of draft, but any team that takes both Palmieri and Halischuk is a clear winner in my eyes.

New York Islanders

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 3 62 Sarnia Sting Mark Katic D 11 0-1-1 Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 3 76 Lincoln Stars Jason Gregoire LW 0 N/A St. John’s IceCaps
4 106 Rimouski Oceanic Maxime Gratchev LW 0 N/A Chicago Express
 6 166 Waterloo Black Hawks Blake Kessel D 0 N/A Adirondack Phantoms
 7 196 Shawinigan Cataractes Simon Lacroix D 0 N/A University of Moncton

I asked my friend and massive Isles fan Jordan Allard for his thoughts on this draft, but he instead proceeded to turn in to a drunken sailor and drop 4,320 F-Bombs.

New York Rangers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 17 Omsk Avangard Alexei Cherepanov RW 0 N/A Deceased (Heart Ailment – October 2008)
 2 48 P.E.I. Rocket Antoine Lafleur G 0 N/A Unknown (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in 08/09)
 5 138 Strathroy Rockets Max Campbell C 0 N/A Stockton Thunder
6 168 Sodertalje Jrs. Carl Hagelin LW 64 14-24-38 New York Rangers
 7 193 Rimouski Oceanic David Skokan C 0 N/A HC Slovan Bratislava
7 198 Ohio Junior Blue Jackets Danny Hobbs LW 0 N/A UMass (Amherst)

Obviously the death of Cherepanov messes up this draft a ton, but other than Hagelin, the other five players haven’t amounted to anything.

Ottawa Senators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 29 Minnesota Golden Gophers Jim O’Brien C 34 3-3-6 Ottawa Senators
2 60 Quebec Remparts Ruslan Bashkirov LW 0 N/A HK Ryazan
 3 90 St. Michael’s Buzzers Louie Caporusso LW 0 N/A Binghamton Senators
 4 120 Shattuck St. Mary’s Ben Blood D 0 N/A North Dakota Fighting Sioux

For a four pick draft, this actually isn’t looking too bad. O’Brien is getting a look now in the show, and Caporusso and Blood are both coming off fine college careers and should be be playing soon. Not so much for Bashkirov though.

Philadelphia Flyers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 2 US NTDP James Van Riemsdyk LW 196 47-52-99 Philadelphia Flyers
 2 41 Lewiston Maineiacs Kevin Marshall D 10 0-0-0 Hershey Bears
3 66 Saskatoon Blades Garrett Klotz LW 0 N/A Adirondack Phantoms
5 122 St. John’s Fog Devils Mario Kempe RW 0 N/A Djurgardens IF
 6 152 Minnesota-State Mankato Jon Kalinski LW 22 1-4-5 Norfolk Admirals
6 161 St. Louis Bandits Patrick Maroon LW 2 0-0-0 Syracuse Crunch
 7 182 US NTDP Brad Phillips G 0 N/A Trenton Titans

Patrick Maroon, one-year OHL God. Besides Van Reimsdyk, not a whole lot going here, plus with him being rumoured to be dealt seemingly all the time, who knows how this draft class is going to look soon.

Phoenix Coyotes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 3 Burnaby Express Kyle Turris C 186 31-44-75 Ottawa Senators
 1 30 Regina Pats Nick Ross D 0 N/A Portland Pirates
2 32 Oshawa Generals Brett MacLean LW 18 2-3-5 Portland Pirates
 2 36 Vastra Frolunda HC Joel Gistedt G 0 N/A Rogle BK
4 103 Slavia Praha HC Vladimir Ruzicka C 0 N/A Slavia Praha HC
 5 123 CSKA Moscow Maxim Goncharov D 0 N/A Portland Pirates
 6 153 Capital District Scott Darling G 0 N/A Mississippi River Kings

Here’s my favourite things about this draft. The Coyotes have MacLean tearing it up in the AHL for a couple years, then waive him. So the Jets take him, waive him after only five games in the show, and the Coyotes take him back. What fun.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 20 Quebec Remparts Angelo Esposito C 0 N/A Texas Stars
2 51 Victoriaville Tigres Keven Veilleux C 0 N/A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
3 78 Kitchener Rangers Robert Bortuzzo D 6 0-0-0 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
 3 80 Merritt Centennials Casey Pierro-Zabotel LW 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
4 111 Mississauga IceDogs Luca Caputi LW 35 3-6-9 Syracuse Crunch
 4 118 Saint John Sea Dogs Alex Grant D 0 N/A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
5 141 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Jake Muzzin D 11 0-1-1 Manchester Monarchs
6 171 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Dustin Jeffrey C 66 12-9-21 Pittsburgh Penguins

From being  a former Greyhound stud, to being on the Penguins, and sharing the exact same date of birth as me, Jeffrey is probably one of my all-time favourite athletes of any kind.

Other than that though, I feel okay about this draft as a Pens fan, with enough guys on D to help depth wise in the future.

The only  two drawbacks though is that we never did sign Jake Muzzin, and that Angelo was a huge bust. Though that makes him more of a hero I suppose.

San Jose Sharks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 9 Ottawa 67’s Logan Couture C 184 68-62-130 San Jose Sharks
 1 28 Omaha Lancers Nick Petrecki D 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
 3 83 Cologne Sharks Timo Pielmeier G 1 0-0-0 (7.50) Elmira Jackets
 3 91 Vancouver Giants Tyson Sexsmith G 0 N/A Worcester Sharks
6 165 Rogle BK Patrik Zackrisson RW 0 N/A Moscow Oblast Atlant
 6 173 Avon Old Farms Nick Bonino C 85 6-14-20 Anaheim Ducks
 7 201 UMass-Amherst Justin Braun D 94 4-18-22 San Jose Sharks
7 203 Portland Winter Hawks Frazer McLaren LW 39 1-5-6 Worcester Sharks

Couture obviously paid off, and Braun looks to be a nice steady d-man. However, the jury is out on the rest of the picks here, for those that are still left in the Sharks system.

St. Louis Blues

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 13 Frolunda Jrs. Lars Eller  C 163 25-22-47 Montreal Canadiens
 1 18 US NTDP Ian Cole D 52 2-8-10 St. Louis Blues
 1 26 Lewiston Maineiacs David Perron C 292 74-99-173 St. Louis Blues
2 39 Frlounda Jrs. Simon Hjalmarsson RW 0 N/A Lulea HF
2 44 Des Moines Buccaneers Aaron Palushaj RW 41 1-4-5 Montreal Canadiens
 3 85 Calgary Hitmen Brett Sonne C 0 N/A Peoria Riverman
 4 96 US NTDP Cade Fairchild D 5 0-1-1 Peoria Riverman
4 100 Lincoln Stars Travis Erstad RW 0 N/A University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
6 160 Erie Otters Anthony Peluso RW 0 N/A Peoria Rivermen
 7 190 Detroit Compuware Trevor Nill C 0 N/A Michigan State Spartans

Before you go any further, look at the stat totals for Brett Sonne during his career and his final season for the Hitmen. My word.

As for the draft itself, it’s a mixed bag really. Some players are gone and some are doing well in the season. But the Perron pick was an outstanding one at the end of the first round.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
2 47 Prince George Cougars Dana Tyrell C 104 6-14-20 Tampa Bay Lightning
 3 75 Dubendorf Luca Cunti LW 0 N/A Zurich
 3 77 Harvard University Alexander Killorn C 0 N/A Norfolk Admirals
 4 107 Lethbridge Hurricanes Mitch Fadden C 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
5 150 Nobles Prep Matt Marshall RW 0 N/A Vermont
6 167 Lulea HF Johan Harju LW 10 1-2-3 Lulea HF
 7 183 Kelowna Rockets Torrie Jung G 0 N/A Laredo Bucks
 7 197 Lewiston Maineiacs Michael Ward D 0 N/A Acadia University
7 210 Burnaby Express Justin Courtnall LW 0 N/A Boston University

The Lightning need to thank their lucky stars for Tyrell doing well. Otherwise, this draft would be right up there with their disaster from 2006.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
3 74 Oshawa Generals Dale Mitchell RW 0 N/A Syracuse Crunch
4 99 Fort Saskatchewan Traders Matt Frattin RW 57 8-7-15 Toronto Maple Leafs
4 104 Salmon Arm Silverbacks Ben Winnett LW 0 N/A Dayton Gems
 5 134 Trencin Dukia Juraj Mikus D 0 N/A Toronto Marlies
6 164 Saint John Sea Dogs Christopher DiDomenico C 0 N/A Rockford IceHogs
 7 194 Linkoping HC Carl Gunnarsson D 187 11-43-54 Toronto Maple Leafs

Oh how I wish the Leafs had kept Dale Mitchell and his magical facial hair. Frattin was stud at North Dakota and Gunnarsson was one heck of a seventh round gem. So overall, not a bad draft for the Leafs given what they had for picks.

Vancouver Canucks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 25 Tri-City Storm Patrick White C 0 N/A Klostersee EHC
 2 33 Everett Silvertips Taylor Ellington D 0 N/A Chicago Express

5 146 CSKA Moscow Ilya Kablukov LW 0 N/A Moscow Oblast Atlant
6 176 Des Moines Buccaneers Taylor Matson C 0 N/A Minnesota Golden Gophers
7 206 Everett Silvertips Dan Gendur RW 0 N/A Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees

Congratulations Taylor Matson. It is up to you to save this draft from being an utter disaster.

Washington Capitals

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
 1 5 Calgary Hitmen Karl Alzner D 215 4-35-39 Washington Capitals
2 34 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Josh Godfrey D 0 N/A Binghamton Senators
 2 46 US NTDP Theo Ruth D 0 N/A Springfield Falcons
 3 84 Sioux City Musketeers Philip DeSimone C 0 N/A Hamilton Bulldogs
 4 108 Omaha Lancers Brett Bruneteau C 0 N/A University of Vermont
5 125 Regina Pats Brent Leffler RW 0 N/A University of Regina
 6 154 Wellington Dukes Dan Dunn G 0 N/A Dayton Gems
 6 180 London Knights Justin Taylor C 0 N/A Kalamazoo Wings
7 185 Omaha Lancers Nick Larson  RW 0 N/A Minnesota Golden Gophers
7 199 Nobles Prep Andrew Glass LW 0 N/A Carleton University

Despite having ten picks, only Karl Alzner has done anything of note. Which is a shame for me, as Godfrey was a stud for the Greyhounds.

Well that’s it for this draft. Enjoy the 2012 edition, but remember, you can’t fully judge how your team truly did until further down the line.

A Look Back At The 2007 OHL Draft

It’s that time of year again for  16 year old hockey players, or 15-year-old’s if your name is Connor McDavid.

Although it’s moved up a month earlier than it’s traditional first Saturday in May date of year’s past, this is a day that I always look forward to, just for the complaints about what a team does before the players that they draft have even played a game.

Like I did last year, and using a method that I personally trust, I have decided to take a look back at the 2007 OHL Entry Draft, and see how those turned out for the 20 teams in the league.

Barrie Colts

14 17 Mississauga Senators Matthew Prapavessis RD 0 N/A Bemidji State
15 17 Detroit Belle Tire U16’s Chris Leone LD 0 N/A Kalamazoo K-Wings

Well a few of those guys worked out okay, especially Behenna as a fifth rounder.  But the later round selections, not so much.

Belleville Bulls

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. OHL Games Played Career Stats Current Status
1 14 Brampton Batallion Tyler Randell RW 267 67-44-111 Kitchener Rangers

13 14 Quinte Red Devils Cameron Yuill LC 0 N/A Wellington Dukes
14 14 Whitby Wildcats Taylor Pernerowski LD 0 N/A Victoria Grizzlies

The Bulls drafted Luke Judson in the fifth round, therefore they automatically win the draft. It’s pretty similar though to Barrie actually, pretty good first few picks, not so much later

14 5 Detroit Belle Tire U16’s Matt Boley G 0 N/A Unknown
15 5 Mississauga Senators Dylan Stone RW 0 N/A Unknown (Villanova Knights in 09/10)

Well I heard that Duchene chap was decent. Shalla and Foote ended up being pretty good hands elsewhere, but Craig Moore was a really good pick in the eighth for the Battalion.

Erie Otters

13 1 Guelph Michael Cazzola LC 219 77-148-225 Ottawa 67’s
15 1 North Bay Trappers James Olivier RC 0 N/A Nepean Raiders

Poor Ryan O’Reilly, a great player who gets overshadowed because of Windsor taking Taylor Hall just a pick later. Overall, a pretty good draft by Erie, especially with Cazzola going in the 13th round. And it’s always nice to have a Riley Sheehan cameo.

While Fowler never played at the Aud as a member of the Rangers, this is still a pretty good draft, especially with pick-ups like Morin in the fourth, Akeson in the sixth, Catenacci in the eighth and D’Amigo near the very end.

The fact that I can’t find anything on Zador for this year upsets the heck out of me. Anyways, overall not the greatest draft in the long-term for the Knights, but they have made up for it big time over the years, so they can have one off draft I think.

Like Guelph, two mainstays on the team’s offense in the first two picks is always a good start for a draft. Plus three great late picks in Shaw, Schwindt and Pacan helps to make this a pretty good draft. Two years, two great drafts by the Dogs.

1 41 Sarnia Sting Marek Indra RW  28 1-1-2 HC Dukla Jihlava
1 44 Niagara Ice Dogs Dallmir Jancovic LW  0 N/A HK Trnava
1 47 Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors Andre Petersson LW  0 N/A Ottawa Senators Organization
 1 50 Barrie Colts Jaroslav Kruzik D  174 10-50-60 HK Nitra
 1 53 Owen Sound Attack Ondrej Pekarik C  48 6-8-14 HC Decin
1 56 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Simon Fischhaber F  106 2-15-17 Nurnberg Ice Tigers
 1 58 London Knights Heikki Hyvonen D 0 N/A Unknown (Jokerit in 08/09)
 2 68 Sudbury Wolves Roman Schlagenhauf C 0 N/A Ambri-Piotta
 2 72 Niagara Ice Dogs Richard Fiala F 0 N/A Unknown (HK 32 Lipotvsky Mikulas in 10/11)

Compared to the 2006 Import Draft, this one is rather tame by comparison. Though my friend Grant would tell you the Greyhounds made their best pick ever at number 56.

A Look Back At The 2006 NHL Draft

Thursday marks the start of another NHL season, and while everyone (Minus about 30 people in Atlanta) is excited about the return of the Winnipeg Jets, I personally am waiting for the Hartford Whalers to return, just so I can hear this again.

(A couple of side notes from that video: If the Whalers ever return that moshing will probably be my reaction to the news, plus that kid in the do-rag at 1:08 or so may or may not be former ROH star Jack Evans).

So with the season starting up again, and to continue with something I did prior to the OHL season, here is a look back at how each team did in the 2006 NHL Draft, five years or so after the fact.

Anaheim Ducks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 19 Michigan Wolverines Mark Mitera D 0 N/A Hamilton Bulldogs
2 38 Halifax Mooseheads Bryce Swan RW 0 N/A St. Francis Xavier University
 3 83 Brampton Batallion John de Gray D 0 N/A Syracuse Crunch
4 112 Belleville Bulls Matt Beleskey LW 97 14-14-28 Anaheim Ducks
 6 172 HPK Petteri Wirtanen C 3 1-0-1 HIFK Helsinki

Well other than Beleskey, not a whole lot here. Poor Johnny De Gray.

Atlanta Thrashers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 12 Barrie Colts Bryan Little C 282 68-81-149 Winnipeg Jets
2 43 Moose Jaw Warriors Riley Holzapfel C 0 N/A St. John’s IceCaps
3 80 Thief River Falls Prowlers Michael Forney LW 0 N/A St. John’s IceCaps
5 135 Sioux Falls Stampede Alex Kangas G 0 N/A Wheeling Nailers
 6 165 HIFK Jonas Enlund C 0 N/A Novosibirsk Siber
7 195 Spruce Grove Saints Jesse Martin C 0 N/A University of Denver
 7 200 CSKA Moscow Arturs Kulda D 6 0-2-2 St. John’s IceCaps
7 210 Tabor Academy Seawolves Will O’Neill D 0 N/A University of Maine

Obviously Little is working out alright for the side, and I figure Kulda will be making some appearances for the Jets as time goes on, so an okay draft for the new Jets.

Boston Bruins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 5 Minnesota Golden Gophers Phil Kessel C 374 128-117-245 Toronto Maple Leafs
 2 37 Severstal Cherepovets Yuri Alexandrov D 0 N/A SKA St. Petersburg
2 50 Vancouver Giants Milan Lucic LW 278 64-87-151 Boston Bruins
3 71 Halifax Mooseheads Brad Marchand RW 97 21-21-42 Boston Bruins
 5 128 Halifax Mooseheads Andrew Bodnarchuk D 5 0-0-0 Providence Bruins
 6 158 Swift Current Broncos Levi Nelson C 0 N/A ESV Kaufbeuren

To see how the Bruins were able to win the Stanley Cup last year, you don’t need to look any further. Plus, trading Kessel for two first round picks is working out pretty good for the future too.

Buffalo Sabres

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 24 Vasteras Hockey Dennis Persson D 0 N/A Rochester Americans
 2 46 Sodertalje SK Jhonas Enroth G 15 9-3-2 (2.83) Buffalo Sabres
 2 57 Windsor Spitfires Mike Weber D 81 4-16-20 Buffalo Sabres
4 117 Saint John Sea Dogs Felix Schutz C 0 N/A Ingolstadt ERC
 5 147 Salisbury Crimson Knights Alex Biega D 0 N/A Rochester Americans
 7 207 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Benjamin Breault C 0 N/A Dalhouise University

Enroth is a good back up for now with Ryan ‘Sparty’ Miller, and Weber is doing alright so far, but the big thing for me will be to see what happens with Persson.

Calgary Flames

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 26 Everett Silvertips Leland Irving G 0 N/A Abbotsford Heat
 3 87 Plymouth Whalers John Armstrong C 0 N/A Abbotsford Heat
 3 89 Warroad Warriors Aaron Marvin C 0 N/A Chicago Express
 4 118 Rouyn-Nordana Huskies Hugo Carpentier C 0 N/A Saguenay Marquis
5 149 KalPa Jusso Pusstinen RW 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
6 179 Breck Mustangs Jordan Fulton LW 0 N/A Stockton Thunder
7 187 Sudbury Wolves Devin DiDiomete LW 0 N/A Connecticut Whale
 7 209 Farjestads BK Jr. Per Johnsson D 0 N/A Troja-Ljungby

Five years and no NHL games. Not the best of draft, but Leland Irving is still a hero.

Carolina Hurricanes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 2 63 US NTDP Jamie McBain D 90 10-30-40 Carolina Hurricanes
3 93 Sarnia Sting Harrison Reed RW 0 N/A Toledo Walleye
 4 123 Kingston Frontenacs Bobby Hughes C 0 N/A EHC 80 Nurnberg
 5 153 Lewiston Maineiacs Stephane Chaput C 0 N/A Providence Bruins
6 183 Clarkson Knights Nick Dodge RW 0 N/A Charlotte Checkers
 7 213 Cornell Big Red Justin Krueger D 0 N/A Charlotte Checkers

McBain’s been good so far, and there’s still a few guys in the system. So I guess it’s an okay draft.

Chicago Blackhawks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 3 North Dakota Fighting Sioux Jonathan Toews C 302 115-152-267 Chicago Blackhawks
2 33 Krylia Sovetov Igor Makarov RW 0 N/A SKA St. Petersburg
2 61 Maine Black Bears Simon Danis-Pepin D 0 N/A Rockford IceHogs
3 76 Sodertalje SK Tony Lagerstrom C 0 N/A Sodertalje
4 95 Kingston Frontenacs Ben Shutron D 0 N/A University of New Brunswick
4 96 US NTDP Joe Palmer G 0 N/A Reading Royals
6 156 Jokerit Jan-Mikael Juutilainen C 0 N/A Kiekko-Laser
6 169 Wellington Dukes Chris Auger C 0 N/A Fort Wayne Komets
7 186 Hamilton Red Wings Peter Leblanc C 0 N/A Rockford IceHogs

Well other than that Toews guy, not much else to right home on here.

Colorado Avalanche

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 18 Kingston Frontenacs Chris Stewart RW 192 67-69-136 St. Louis Blues
 2 51 US NTDP Nigel Williams D 0 N/A Syracuse Crunch
 2 59 Brandon Wheat Kings Codey Burki C 0 N/A Lugano
 3 81 US NTDP Mike Carman C 0 N/A Lake Erie Monsters
 4 110 US NTDP Kevin Montgomery D 0 N/A Florida Everblades
 7 201 Michigan Wolverines Billy Sauer G 0 N/A Greenville Road Warriors

With Stewart being traded to the Blues, there’s no one left from the 2006 Draft on the main roster. Might be a reason why the Avs are not doing well these days.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 6 Drummondville Voltigeurs Derick Brassard C 201 37-73-110 Columbus Blue Jackets
 3 69 London Knights Steve Mason G 173 77-67-23 (2.77) Columbus Blue Jackets
 3 85 Plymouth Whalers Tom Sestito C 13 2-2-4 Adirondack Phantoms
4 113 Lethbridge Hurricanes Ben Wright D 0 N/A University of New Brunswick
5 129 HIFK Bobby Nyholm RW 0 N/A HIFK Helsinki
5 136 Michigan State Spartans Nick Sucharski LW 0  N/A Cracovia Krakow
 5 142 Drummondville Voltigeurs Maxime Frechette D 0 N/A UQTR
 6 159 Prince George Cougars Jesse Dudas D 0 N/A Texas Brahmas
7 189 Medicine Hat Tigers Derek Dorsett RW 179 12-24-36 Columbus Blue Jackets
7 194 Moncton Wildcats Matt Marquardt LW 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors

The first two picks have done well, and Dorsett was a great seventh round pick. Plus any team that drafted Bobby Nyholm was a clear cut winner.

Dallas Stars

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 27 Rouyn-Nordana Huskies Ivan Vishnevskiy D 5 0-2-2 Moscow Oblast Atlant
3 90 Brampton Battalion Aaron Snow G 0 N/A Western
4 120 Cushing Academy Penguins Richard Bachman G 1 0-0-0 (0.00) Texas Stars
5 138 Newmarket Hurricanes David Mcintyre C 0 N/A Houston Aeros
5 150 HIFK Max Warn LW 0 N/A Pelicans

We still have a few more teams too look at, but I think this is our early winner for worst draft in hindsight.

Detroit Red Wings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
2 41 Kingston Frontenacs Cory Emmerton LW 2 1-0-1 Detroit Red Wings
 2 47 Belleville Bulls Shawn Matthias C 126 15-21-36 Florida Panthers
2 62 Huddinge IK Dick Axelsson LW 0 N/A Modo
 3 92 Hammarby IF Daniel Larsson G 0 N/A HV71 Jonkoping
6 182 Budejovice Jr. Jan Mursak RW 19 1-0-1 Grand Rapids Griffins
7 191 Burnsville Blaze Nick Oslund RW 0 N/A Toledo Walleye
 7 212 Regina Pats Logan Pyett D 0 N/A Grand Rapids Griffins

Sure it might not look great right now, but when we look at this in another five years time, both Axelsson and Larsson will be multi-time award winners.

Edmonton Oilers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 2 45 Des Moines Buccaneers Jeff Petry D 35 1-4-5 Edmonton Oilers
 3 75 Owen Sound Attack Theo Peckham D 102 3-11-14 Edmonton Oilers
 5 133 Brampton Battalion Bryan Pitton G 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
 5 140 Providence Friars Cody Wild D 0 N/A Reading Royals
6 170 HC Lada Togliatti Alexander Bumagin RW 0 N/A Novokuznetsk Metallurg

While it’s not the killer drafts of later on (at this point at least) Petry and Peckham are becoming key guys on the blueline during the rebuilt for the Oilers.

Florida Panthers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 10 HC Rabat Kladno Michael Frolik LW 241 53-73-126 Chicago Blackhawks
3 73 Everett Silvertips Brady Calla RW 0 N/A Ontario Reign
 4 103 Guelph Storm Michael Caruso D 0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
4 116 Eau Claire North Huskies Derrick LaPoint D 0 N/A Reading Royals
 6 155 Windsor Spitfires Peter Aston D 0 N/A Unknown (Utah Grizzlies in 09/10)
 7 193 Nanaimo Clippers Marc Cheverie G 0 N/A Portland Pirates

What I said earlier about Colorado can be said as well for the Panthers (who are the Pittsburgh Pirates of hockey according to my younger brother) with Frolik now playing in Chi-Town.

Los Angeles Kings

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 11 Lewiston Maineiacs Jonathan Bernier G 32 15-11-3 (2.57) Los Angeles Kings
1 17 Des Moines Buccaneers Trevor Lewis C 83 4-12-16 Los Angeles Kings
2 48 Quebec Rempards Joey Ryan D 0 N/A Bakersfield Condors
3 74 Miami (OH) Redhawks Jeff Zatkoff G 0 N/A Manchester Monarchs
3 86 Seattle Thunderbirds Bud Holloway RW 0 N/A Skelleftea
4 114 Leksands IF Niclas Andersen D 0 N/A Brynas IF Gavle
5 134 Yale Bulldogs David Meckler LW 0 N/A Manchester Monarchs
5 144 Champlain Cougars Martin Nolet D 0 N/A Windsor Wild
6 164 Eisbaren Berlin Constantin Braun LW 0 N/A Berlin Polar Bears

Overall I think this draft worked out alright, with Bernier now in that goalie duo with Jonathan Quick (Or Jonathan ‘Quick’ Swick as Brett like to call him).

Minnesota Wild

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 9 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles James Sheppard C 224 11-38-49 San Jose Sharks
2 40 Everett Silvertips Ondrej Fiala LW 0 N/A SK Kadan
3 72 Oshawa Generals Cal Clutterbuck RW 230 43-30-73 Minnesota Wild
 4 102 Apple Valley Eagles Kyle Medvec D 0 N/A Houston Aeros
 5 132 Jokerit Niko Hovinen G 0 N/A Pelicans
 6 162 EHC Basel Julian Walker RW 0 N/A Ambri-Piotta
 7 192 Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders Chris Hickey C 0 N/A University Of St. Thomas

Yes Sheppard is no longer in Minnesota, but Cal has turned out to be a fine pick for a third rounder.

Montreal Canadiens

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 20 Apple Valley Eagles David Fischer D 0 N/A Florida Everblades
 2 49 Kootenay Ice Ben Maxwell C 32 1-1-2 St. John’s IceCaps
 2 53 Acadie-Bathurst Titan Mathieu Carle D 3 0-0-0 Syracuse Crunch
 3 66 Calgary Hitmen Ryan White C 43 2-5-7 Montreal Canadiens
 5 139 HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk Pavel Valentenko D 0 N/A Connecticut Whale
7 199 Portland Winter Hawks Cameron Cepek D 0 N/A Unknown (Prince George Cougars in 08/09)

Well I’m not really sure this draft was the best for the Habs, especially since your top pick is playing for those mighty Everblades.

Nashville Predators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
2 56 US NTDP Blake Geoffrion LW 20 6-2-8 Nashville Predators
4 105 Ilves Niko Snellman RW 0 N/A Jokipojat
5 146 Colgate Raiders Mark Dekanich G 1 0-0-0 (3.60) Springfield Falcons
6 176 US NTDP Ryan Flynn RW 0 N/A Milwaukee Admirals
7 206 Vasteras Jr. Viktor Sjodin LW 0 N/A Oskarshamm IK

Okay it may not look so hot thus far, but Geoffrion was really good in college and should be playing well for the Preds as time goes on.

New Jersey Devils

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 30 Saginaw Spirit Matt Corrente D 34 0-6-6 Albany Devils
2 58 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Alexander Vasyunov LW 18 1-4-5 Deceased (September 2011 – Plane Crash)
 3 67 Alemetjevsk Kirill Tulupov D 0 N/A Oklahoma City Barons
3 77 CSKA Moscow Vladimir Zharkov RW 78 2-12-14 Albany Devils
 4 107 Penticton Vees T.J. Miller D 0 N/A Merano
 5 148 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies Olivier Magnan D 18 0-0-0 Val Puseria
6 178 New York Bobcats Tony Romano C 0 N/A Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 7 208 Shawinigan Cataractes Kyell Henegan D 0 N/A St. Thomas University

Knowing the Devils, I’m pretty sure a lot of those guys will make their impact later on in time, such as Corrente and Zharkov.

New York Islanders

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 7 Des Moines Buccaneers Kyle Okposo RW 192 44-72-126 New York Islanders
 2 60 Assat Jesse Joensuu RW 60 8-5-13 HV71
3 70 Frolunda HC Robin Figren LW 0 N/A Linkoping
4 100 US NTDP Rhett Rakhshani RW 2 0-0-0 Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 4 108 Sherwood Park Crusaders Jase Weslosky G 0 N/A Ontario Reign
4 115 HC Kosice Tomas Marcinko RW 0 N/A Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 4 119 Saint Sebastian’s Arrows Doug Rogers C 0 N/A Wheeling Nailers
 5 126 Des Moines Buccaneers Shane Sims D 1 0-0-0 Gwinnett Gladiators
 5 141 Malmo Jr. Kim Johansson C 0 N/A Herlev
 6 160 Moncton Wildcats Andrew MacDonald D 109 5-29-34 New York Islanders
6 171 Governor Dummer Academy Bryan Day RW 0 N/A Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 6 173 Djurgarden Jr. Stefan Ridderwall G 0 N/A Timra
7 190 Springfield Jr. Blues Troy Mattila LW 0 N/A Dartmouth

Man that’s a lot of picks, so percentage wise it may not look all that hot. But, both Okposo and MacDonald have done well for themselves, especially MacDonald being a sixth round pick.

New York Rangers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 21 Owen Sound Attack Bob Sanguinetti D 5 0-0-0 Charlotte Checkers
 2 54 Lokotmotiv Yaroslavl Artem Anisimov C 165 30-42-72 New York Rangers
3 84 Halifax Mooseheads Ryan Hillier LW 0 N/A Elmira Jackets
4 104 Vsetinska Hokejova David Kveton RW 0 N/A Trinec Ocelari HC
5 137 HC Dukla Trencin Tomas Zaborsky LW 0 N/A Assat Pori
6 174 Prince George Cougars Eric Hunter C 0 N/A University Of Alberta
 7 204 Trinec Jr. Lukas Zeliska C 0 N/A MHC Martin

Anisimov was a really good second round pick, but other than that, not so much action for the Rangers.

Ottawa Senators

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 28 Sudbury Wolves Nick Foligno LW 269 46-55-101 Ottawa Senators
 3 68 Green Bay Gamblers Eric Gryba D 0 N/A Binghamton Senators
 3 91 HK Riga 2000 Kaspars Daugavins LW 1 0-0-0 Binghamton Senators
 4 121 Gatineau Olympiques Pierre-Luc Lessard D 0 N/A UQTR
 5 151 Saginaw Spirit Ryan Daniels G 0 N/A Wilfred Laurier
 6 181 Beaver Valley Nitehawks Kevin Koopman D 0 N/A Brown University
7 211 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Erik Condra RW 26 6-5-11 Ottawa Senators

Daaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnniellllls! As for the draft, Foligno has been good, Condra was a nice player at the end of last year, and how in the heck has Kaspars Daugavins only played one game in the show so far?

Philadelphia Flyers

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 22 Gatineau Olympiques Claude Giroux RW 208 50-100-150 Philadelphia Flyers
2 39 Sioux Falls Stampede Andreas Nodl RW 115 12-15-27 Philadelphia Flyers
2 42 US NTDP Mike Ratchuk LW 0 N/A Elmira Jackets
2 55 HC Lada Togliatti Denis Bodrov D 0 N/A Spartak Moscow
3 79 Bowling Green Falcons Jonathan Matsumoto C 13 2-0-2 Charlotte Checkers
4 101 Ilves Joonas Lehtivuori D 0 N/A Modo
4 109 Budejovice Jr. Jakub Kovar  G  0  N/A Ceske Budejovice HC
5 145 Providence Friars Jon Rheault  RW  0 N/A Abbotsford Heat
 6 175 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Michael Dupont  G  0 N/A Villars
7 205 Traktor Chelyabinsk Andrei Popov RW  0 N/A Chelyabinsk Traktor

While Bobby Clarke didn’t remember his name when he drafted him, Giroux has been great for the Flyers thus far. Nodl’s been okay as well too, but not much after that.

Phoenix Coyotes

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 8 Everett Silvertips Peter Mueller C 222 48-79-127 Colorado Avalanche
 1 29 US NTDP Chris Summers D 2 0-0-0 Portland Pirates
 3 88 Frolunda HC Jonas Ahnelov D 0 N/A Modo
 5 130 US NTDP Brett Bennett G 0 N/A Wisconsin
5 131 HC Rabat Kladno Martin Latal LW 0 N/A Kladno
 5 152 Medicine Hat Tigers Jordan Bendfeld D 0 N/A Stockton Thunder
 7 188 Western Michigan Broncos Chris Frank D 0 N/A Cardiff Devils
7 196 Boston College Eagles Benn Ferriero C 57 7-7-14 San Jose Sharks

With no one left on the team as the season begins, I’m not sure if the Coyotes are kicking themselves in the pants at the moment, especially when Ferriero showed up out of nowhere during last year’s playoffs.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 2 Peterborough Petes Jordan Staal C 369 95-103-198 Pittsburgh Penguins
 2 32 Brainerd Warriors Carl Sneep D 0 N/A Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins
 3 65 US NTDP Brian Strait D 3 0-0-0 Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins
 5 125 Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks Chad Johnson G 6 1-2-1 (2.59) Connecticut Whale
 7 185 HIFK Timo Seppanen D 0 N/A TPS Turku

If you ever watch the NHL Draft on TSN, they usually tout the Pens as being a great example of how to draft properly. Well when you have high picks (Fleury, Crosby, Malkin and Staal) that tends to happen, but not a whole lot has happened after that, proving that the Wings are still leading the way when it comes to Draft pimping.

San Jose Sharks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 16 Prince George Cougars Ty Wishart D 25 1-5-6 Bridgeport Sound Tigers
 2 36 Ottawa 67’s Jamie McGinn LW 143 15-10-25 San Jose Sharks
 4 98 Oshawa Generals James DeLory D 0 N/A Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs
5 143 Kamloops Blazers Ashton Rome RW 0 N/A Portland Pirates
7 202 Boston Terriers John McCarthy LW 41 2-2-4 Worcester Sharks
7 203 Sioux Falls Stampede Jay Barriball RW 0 N/A Peoria Rivermen

While Wishart didn’t work out so well, McGinn has been really nice as a second rounder for the Sharks. Plus who doesn’t love a kid playing for the Mudbugs.

St. Louis Blues

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 1 US NTDP Erik Johnson D 225 23-78-101 Colorado Avalanche
 1 25 Vasteras Patrik Berglund C 228 56-69-125 St. Louis Blues
 2 31 HC Vitkovice Tomas Kana C 6 0-2-2 Viktovice HC
 3 64 Linkopings HC Jonas Junland D 4 0-2-2 Astana Barys
 4 94 Omaha Lancers Ryan Turek D 0 N/A Utah Grizzlies
 4 106 Zurich/Kusnacht Reto Berra G 0 N/A Biel
 5 124 St. Louis Park Orioles Andy Sackrison C 0 N/A Morrum
6 154 Belmont Hill Matthew McCollem LW 0 N/A Harvard
 7 184 IF Bjorkloven Alexander Hellstrom D 0 N/A HK SKP Poprad

I guess you could consider this draft not working out with Johnson being traded and all that, but Berglund has been a pretty good first rounder for the Blues. And who doesn’t love a Reto Berra cameo.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 15 Seattle Thunderbirds Riku Helenius G 1 0-0-0 (0.00) JyP HT Jyvaskyla
 3 78 Salisbury Crimson Knights Kevin Quick D 6 0-0-1 Norfolk Admirals
6 168 Swift Current Broncos Dane Crowley D 0 N/A University Of Manitoba
7 198 HC MVD Tver Denis Kazionov LW 0 N/A Yekaterinburg Automobilist

Wow. I have no words about this draft. Well other than, Riku Helenius is a hero.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played

1 13 HC Rabat Kladno Jiri Tlusty LW 149 17-21-38 Carolina Hurricanes
2 44 Metallurg Magnitogorsk Nikolai Kulemin LW 233 61-63-124 Toronto Maple Leafs
 4 99 Red Deer Rebels James Reimer G 37 20-10-5 (2.60) Toronto Maple Leafs
 4 111 EC Bad Tolz Korbinian Holzer D 2 0-0-0 Toronto Marlies
6 161 Vermont Catamounts Viktor Stalberg LW 117 21-17-38 Chicago Blackhawks
 6 166 Shattuck-Saint Mary’s Sabres Tyler Ruegsegger C 0 N/A Alaska Aces
 6 180 Assat Leo Komarov C 0 N/A Moscow Dynamo

John Ferguson Jr. might not be looked upon fondly by anyone, but this draft does look pretty good in hindsight compared to some of the other drafts on this list.

Vancouver Canucks

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
1 14 Spokane Chiefs Michael Grabner RW 96 39-24-63 New York Islanders
 3 82 IF Bjorkloven Jr. Daniel Rahimi D 0 N/A HV71 Jonkoping
6 163 HC CSKA Moscow Sergei Shirokov RW 8 1-0-1 CSKA Moscow
6 167 Kloten Flyers Juraj Simek RW 0 N/A Geneve Servette
7 197 Prince George Cougars Evan Fuller C 0 N/A Unknown (Chilliwack Bruins in 08/09)

Well Grabner has sure worked out….On Long Island. If he keeps that up, I would imagine the Canucks might be wondering what if for years to come.

Washington Capitals

Rnd. No. Team Player Name Pos. NHL Games Played
Career Stats Current Status
 1 4 Brynas IF Nicklas Backstrom C 323 87-236-323 Washington Capitals
 1 23 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Semyon Varlamov G 59 30-13-12 (2.39) Colorado Avalanche
 2 34 HC Sparta Praha Michal Neuvirth G 70 38-17-4 (2.55) Washington Capitals
 2 35 Baie-Comeau Drakkar Francois Bouchard RW 0 N/A Hershey Bears
 2 52 Burnaby Express Keith Seabrook D 0 N/A San Antonio Rampage
4 97 Mississauga Ice Dogs Oskar Osala LW 0 N/A Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik
4 122 Brampton Battalion Luke Lynes LW 0 N/A University Of New Brunswick
5 127 Quebec Remparts Maxime Lacroix LW 0 N/A Hershey Bears
 6 157 Lakeland Eagles Brent Gwidt C 0 N/A Nebraska-Omaha
 6 177 Acadie Bathurst Titan Mathieu Perreault C 56 11-12-23 Washington Capitals

Finally it’s Ovechkin and Friends, who had a pretty good draft here. And it might even work out better come next year’s draft if the Avalanche suck, as the Caps might be able to turn Varlamov into Nail Yakupov.
